Thinking about trading my 2003 XB9R for a 2002 X1 Lightning... I'm tired of riding in the fetal position and always liked the tubers--but I am not that familiar with them.

It's a very clean bike--aftermarket vance and hines exhaust is the only non-stock parts I can see. It books for more than my firebolt, and the dealer's numbers are right on according to kbb.com. I'd be paying about $1250.00 in the trade. Here's a (cellphone) pic: http://www.rideblackhills.com/buell/x1.jpg

Having no experience with the X1--would I like it? I'm a big guy, so riding position is the main reason why I want to switch to a lightning. I do really like the looks and the idea of the tubers--but will I miss the "advancements" I have on my XB?

Yes, I thought about changing the bars on my firebolt--and it's still an option... but want to hear from the board: Tell me if you love or hate your X1 Lightning--and if you can compare it to an XB.

Thanks!

See if you can get a test ride - that is the only way to know for sure!

As a fellow big guy, I can tell you that a S3 has plenty of room.

Not sure about a X1, but you should try a few to see what fits. Handlebar switch will help, as a custom seat also.

I took a test drive on it this afternoon and I'm sold! That X1 is so much more comfortable for me than my XB... I put a deposit down on it immediately to hold it for me! It feels just a bit "heavier" in the controls, but combined with the more comfortable riding position and my more relaxed riding style, I think it's just what I need.

I'll pick it up this week and can't wait to put some real miles on it. I have a lot to learn about the tubers so please please fill me in on more secrets! Thanks Jim and Scott for posting.

I love my X1 and the riding position is far better for real sized people than the XBs. You won't regret it. Also, if you do your own maintenance, everything is much easier to get at than on the XBs. Buy a Corbin seat too. They are worth every cent.

I just bought a 2008 ULY but I will never sell my X1.

The uly is more roomy, feels lighter at lower speeds, very plush suspension.....

But it's still not the X1.
It will never be.

I love my X1. I've been slowly tweaking it, but it's a ride that's never going to leave the garage.

You can 'perk up' the controls by dialing in more rear spring preload (less sag). I've been chasing a "twitch" in my S2 recently that was driving me nuts, it was tipping in from center if I so much as breathed or turned my head. My dumb ass forgot all about the sag setting, and when I finally remembered and dialed in about another half inch...PERFECT. But the purpose of the story is, you can make them tip in super-quick if you set up the sag for an agressive setting. I think mine was actually set per the manual (3/4" to 1"), but I'm not that good, so I like my bikes a little more lazy. lol.

Good call on the X1. I have a Uly and 2 tubers (S2 and S1W). The tubers have always had more room for me - 6'4" - with the exception of the Uly. And +1 on the above - tubers practically invite you to wrench on them they're so easy.

I'm with all of you guys who absolutely love the X1. It is a remarkable machine that has made me a better rider despite myself. But I had a choice to make and cost considerations along with other data including time and geography, which brought me to the decision to let go of my X1. I'm not going to offer it on bad web cause I want maximum dollar(it's well worth it)and I know how you guys are(squeak)no one has devaluated the Buell as bad as Bad Webbers. I'll still have my V-star and the mutant...still a Buell. The X1 will always be the best bike I ever rode.

You know... I was in a spot last fall, and had the X for sale....

No one wanted it, er... no one wanted to part with the cash to get it....

I am glad personally...

Over the last month or so, I have had someone trying to buy it from me....

I MIGHT have been more receptive to the idea... if he made a better offer... Oh well... my gain...

The first pic is with the old clubman bars, the rest are with the CrossRoads bars...

And if you are a bigger guy, the ergos on THIS X1 would be painful.

Sorry for the hijack...

Chase

Well I picked it up today and put a hundred miles on it... it's exactly what I needed! This bike has gotten me excited about riding again--I was so uncomfortable riding the firebolt! Not to knock the XB9R--I guess I just grew out of it.

I realize it was probably loaded question to ask on the "old school" board, but I appreciate all of you who responded--I'll depend on this board to help me answer some questions in the future.

On my immediate shopping list: some dirtbike bars and a corbin seat.

Interesting comments. I rode a Uly a while ago and it was indeed roomy. The only problem for me was at a shade under 6 feet, the ground was about six inches below where I thought it should be! I had to hang my butt off the side to touch the ground. Definitely a bike for big boys.

+1 on the dirtbike bars!

Just grind off the crossbar, and that's all you need.

I rotated mine forward a bit to increase the weight on the front a bit.

I was out last night on mine setting off yuppies' car alarms in Boston : )

S3T bars might be worth a look. 1+in taller that stock, stock cables fit (barely), and did wonders for me.

I wanna try to put some fat bars on it... I looked at the "FAT BAR" Combo at Precision Engineering
and I think it will bolt up--just need to find a way to attach the dash panel.

Anybody else put fatbars on an X-1? How about Fasst Flexx bars?

I wouldn't bother.
Steel dirtbike bars = $16 and use all the same hardware.
