Hi guys,

I was going to heat wrap my Force pipe, but when I started removing the exhaust the top front stud broke – actually the nut came off with about 1/8” of stuff on it. When I went for a ride it was popping on deceleration, so I thought I’d messed something up, but when I looked down at the pipe I saw a hairline crack.

The PO had power coated – not thermo coated – the pipe, and I’m wondering if this might have weakened the material enough to cause a crack lengthwise. The crack sems to be growing, but this could be my imagination...

In any case, now I’ll need a new system, I guess. This will be an end-of-the-summer purchase, since just buying the M2 drained the household. So my options would seem to be:

1) Look for a stock header on Ebay and run an aftermarket can
2) Try to get the Force pipe repaired and buy the baffler
3) Try to get a stock system

I would definitely like something quieter than the Force pipe w/out the baffler. It would also be nice to have something that didn’t scorch my leg quite so much. I know the later M2s had headers that were re-routed to avoid contact with the rider’s right leg, but could I run one of these or would it interfere with the frame?

And finally, would a stock or semi-stock setup feel tepid after running an open pipe? I do like the power on this thing. I know I’ll need to rejet on anything at this point…

Thanks,

Randy

Quick update: I just checked the bike and the broken stud seems to have vibrated out during my ride. Now I just need the pipe to heal itself. ; )

It also looks like the pipe isn't really mounted correctly. There's a front bracket that's not attached to anything. Maybe this pipe was for a later Buell or something..?

Your profile doesn't say which year your M2 is.

Your broken exhaust stud is probably due to the front hanger not being used. Nice that the left over end came out, hopefully the threads are still okay. There are quite a few stock pipes and used aftermarket mufflers out there for cheap, maybe try posting in the wanted section.

I've read that the 99-02 header can be used on the earlier models (s3 & x1 have an o2 bung, m2's do not).

the newer 99+ pipes have to be "massaged" to fit.

Yeah, I’m a little worried about the threads in the head, too.

I’m on the road later this week and am going to swing by the only Buell place I know of in Western North Carolina – in Hickory – to pick up the stud, oil, filter, and a manual. My wife and I are still running on fumes so a new pipe, header or can is out of the question for the time being unless I can get them DIRT cheap.

Instead I’m going to drop the system, if I can figure out how to remove the nut directly under the big air box bracket, try to get the crack welded, then wrap everything and see if I can install the thing correctly. I’ve e-mailed Force to see if they could send me a picture of how the front lines up, but I’ll search through the archives here, too, in the next few days.

Looking to the future… I’ve seen quite a few more X1 or post ’99 headers than ones for my bike – a 1997 M2. Can I “massage” these to work, Guell? I thought that the first gen S1 / M2 went around the frame and later models somehow went through it…

Any information would be helpful : )

Thanks

Randy

Just use the correct header for your year. The twisty last generation 99-02 headers have to be battered to work on the earlier frames... it's not pretty and unnecessary when you can get the correct header.

You might be able to score a race header if you're patient.

Ok, now I'm getting somewhere. I had no luck searching the archive directly, but came across this post via Google:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/306976.html?1191713270

So it looks like the Force system's weakness is in that front mount. The tech I e-mailed at Force steered me towards this:

http://www.useforce.com/proddetail.asp?prod=7000FP S

Which might be the long-term answer, if I use this thing. In the meantime, I'm going to try to use the front bracket on the pipe and a generic muffler hanger (something like this: http://www.jonesland.com/evo/Images/Exhaust_Hanger 2_Rear.JPG)

My wife wrapped the pipe today and it looks sort of tough, so I do hope I can get it to work... At least until I stumble over pirate gold or something. I want to ride my new bike!
