Arguably, the X1, second, the S3(same suspension, a little more weight[99+]), then, the S1/S2, then, the M2.... The X1/S3 have a brace already added into the frame by induction in 99, with, 54mm forks, and the updated shock(speculation). The S1/S2*98 S3*, have 54mm forks, and an earlier rear shock, and needs a frame brace welded in, or bolted in(available aftermarket) The M2 has 48mm conventional forks, and depending on year, has features mentioned above.... The X1, was the lighter, and more advanced of the models... Pound for pound, I would say the difference is negligable on the street. with a person with a bit of skill, he would find the differences pretty easy to detect when pushing them to the limit... Well I guess part of it could be that my S2 came with a new Works rear shock when I bought it, but between that, the taller billet S2T handlebars, and the 1" dropped foptpegs, it just makes me feel more confident when riding. What is this brace you speak of? I never knew of such a thing. It should be added to my "to do" list. | ||

That's an easy answer. A rider that can actually put modern suspension to its limits. A professional racer can run circles around an average rider no matter what bike they had... I've seen a GS500 rail around the outside of a GSXR 1000 at Laguna Seca. It's not the bike that limits you, it's YOU that limits you... | ||

I still get a severe case of perma-grin railing the mountains on my '02 M2. I don't know if it's better/worse than the other models, but I know 3rd gear twisties is the ultimate sweet spot for it. Ask Glitch about arrows and indians  | ||

Suspension set up is the answer ... Any of the Models set up with the OEM components correctly will do the job for the every day rider ... Then you have to go to the BIG $$$.$$ up-date parts to get it race(as in TRACK RACING)ready ... | ||

the question is which handles BEST. Not tuned, setup for rider blah, blah or rider ability. I would say the 2000 s-3 or x-1 since they have the braced frame, fuelie motor with more h.p. and inverted 54mm front forks. The QUESTION WAS which handles best. Not who can set it up, or who can ride best. Heck let me set up my XS1100 how i want it and i can kill most any bike (Message edited by tom_b on June 10, 2008) | ||

Then the "QUESTION" should have been what Model handles best when received from the Dealer which is/was not set up for the owner with out re-guard to riders height, weight, and riding ability !!! | ||

LaFayette, Thank you. That is exactly what I was should have asked. That said, I have noticed that: My S3 has a softer ride than my M2L and the wheels seem to stay on contact with rough pavement better than than the M2L. However, the M2L seems much more stable during hard braking with much less front end dive than the S3. Also, the M2L seems to initiate turns more easily and is more "flickable" than the S3. There is a 1 inch difference in ride height at rest but I have not determined if there is much difference in actual cornering ability/lean angle. The M2L is much easier to launch with less rearward weight transfer so it seems to take off faster without unwanted wheelies. My take so far is that on a smooth road with sweeping moderate-speed curves, the M2L is best but if there are bumps or high-speed curves the S3 is best. Any thoughts? Regards, Dave | ||

The M2 is a competent handler, but the low pegs, shift and brake levers (a trait shared by the S3) really hamper the bikes cornering ability. The mismatched damping and spring rates in the front fork causes harsh damping for light riders and excessive bottoming for heavier riders, which can play havoc when the pace picks up and the roads are rough. All these issues can be resolved, of course, but the M2 was by no means the best out-of-the-box handling tube frame, that's for sure. Raise the pegs just slightly, get fork springs rated for your weight and a quality shock, and their is nothing that keeps the M2 from being as good handling as any tuber. | ||

Once I added the proper rate front springs for my not so svelte frame and race tech gold valves on my 99 S3 front shocks, it was like someone swapped a new bike that looked exactly like mine but handled totally different. The front end worked with the back that was dampened and sprung by a works performance shock. The nose didn't dive into a corner, it just settled in and stayed planted. | ||

I think I'm much more stable on my S2 than on my S1. The slightly longer wheelbase coupled with double-adjustable front forks and a little more bodyweight and a less cramped riding position (easier to move around) seem to make it much more planted in the twisties. The S1W seems more nervous to me, but that could be attributed to suspension setup and not frame characteristics... | ||

Has to be the S1 in Nuke blue and Molten orange!! The blue had a Great effect on the frames geometry and the orange increased the cornering by 2.675% These numbers were never published!! Still SECRET!!! SO THERE. Have a great day guys, Chuck Horton. | ||

The X1 has the better fork, swingarm, braced frame etc.. of the tubers. And when running properly my X1 will kick my 97 S1's butt. SteveH | ||
