Hi guys,

Around seven years ago I test rode a 1997 M2 at Motorcycles of Manchester in NH and fell in love. Unfortunately, by the time I saved up the money to buy the bike, it was gone. So I got a big Triumph Trident 900 instead. I’ve gone through five bikes since then – the Trident, a GB500, a Hawk GT, a VFR700, and most recently a Sprint 955 – but finally got back to a Buell.

I picked up a clean ’97 Cyclone this week, after ditching the Sprint in a huff. The Buell is everything the Triumph wasn’t: Fun, light, elemental… It seems like a grown up Hawk in many ways, which fits my driving style and new home (Asheville, NC) much better than the Sport Tourer.

The first mod I’m making to the bike is to either thermo coat the header or wrap it and use a heat shield, but my first purchase needs to be a manual. What is the consensus as to the best shop manual for these machines? Does Buell have its own? Is there a Clymer’s? I’m not a great wrench, but I figure I can do much of the maintenance myself.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Take care,

Randy

The factory service and parts manuals are worth every penny. They should both be available from one of our sponsors.

+2 on that. especially the parts manual. get's you into the nitty gritty of what it looks like. btw welcome. right now i'm in the greenville area and i was up in asheville to see the x sister inlaw yesterday. their daughter will be going to college there come fall. we took the cage cause the wife said it was hot but the next time we get up that way i'll be sure to take one of the bikes to enjoy the ride.

what color is your m2. happened to ride past a blue m2 while heading home. once in a while we head up to ceasers head or elsewhere in nc so try and keep tabs as to what's going on in the stormfronts sc section.

Thanks for your help, guys. Right now I’m absolutely tapped out and can barely keep gas in the Buell, but once I see daylight I’ll get the factory service and parts manuals.

Here’s the ad for my Buell that I responded to, Nevrenuf:

I went on a short tour with my brother and pal two weeks ago. My brother has a Thunderbolt and my buddy has a BMW F650. Despite everything the mags say about the Triumph Sprint ST, I found it heavy in the tight stuff and not much better anywhere else but on the slab. I got home, peeled the bugs off the bike, and sold it that week.

The thing that got me was that my friend didn’t seem any the worse for having a small-ish single cylinder. My brother’s Buell ran flawlessly and seemed a lot more nimble in the twisties. So I aimed somewhere in the middle with the M2 (plus it's the EXACT model I wanted years ago). It seems lighter and more Buell-like than my brother’s 01 Thunderbolt, but more powerful and sporty than my friend’s F650.

I’m not a squid, but I’ve already dusted a Ducati and VFR up one of our staple roads – Town Mtn Road – and I find myself riding everywhere, whereas I felt I had to get a docking pass to take the 955 out if the hanger. If I can limp along until my next paycheck, I’ll splash some cash on a wrap, the manual and oil, but other than this it’s a damn near perfect machine.

Let me know if anyone is in the area and want a guided tour of some great roads or places to eat

Talk soon,

Randy

You can download the 1996 S1 service manual right here on the BadWeb. It's not a proper replacement for the correct M2 service manual, but it's a good reference for basic engine maintenance.

That should give you a good start... and the feeling you are not totally in the dark.

if you go to the BRAN on the other page you can post your phone number if you want. and the next time we go for a ride up that way i'll give you a shout. it was 61 miles from the x sister inlaws house(which is down town) to my door step in greer so it's an easy ride for me.

btw, nice m2. they are the best buells out there. ask anyone who comes to this thread.
