when its cold, i start my x1 and before it turns over once it almost sounds like the battery is dead and it has a bit of trouble turning over, then it will start but with the engine light on. once it runs for a few seconds it goes out, i was told not to start the bike until that light goes out. the battery has only had one season of riding (maybe 1500 miles) and then it sat over the winter (3-4 months) my battery cant be bad already, or can it. oh, it does start normally once its real good and hot. am i freaking out, or do i just need to keep a battery tender on it? i just dont want to get stuck somewhere! can an X1 be bump started? |

can an X1 be bump started? If you have enough juice to power the fuel pump, and other electrical stuff... Test the battery, the charging system, then if needed, test the starter(though I do doubt it since it turns over fine hot).. Chase (Message edited by chasespeed on May 23, 2008) |

Mine does the same thing when first starting cold, you wait for the FI to finish, try to start and it misses and the light comes back on. |

My has done this for years (I've had it since 01). Sounds like some of the old chevy impalas I used to drive. I put in the Odyssey battery and its still the same. My X1 is about to go over 40k, you'll be fine. Get a battery tender for the winter, the battery will last a lot longer Bump starting solo isn't the easiest thing in the world, helps a ton if you've got dry road and a nice downhill. Don't bother if its wet Good luck (Message edited by mbsween on May 23, 2008) |

I don't know if this carries over to our bikes, but on v-8's this can be caused by too much initial timing advance..... |

I had a similar problem with my S1. Double checked that battery cables were tight. Although they were I was still able to tighten the positive cable ever so slightly and problem solved. |

I had a similar issue. I replaced the starter and it went away. Water had leaked into the starter and the solenoid through the holes for the wire that connect the two. Caused just enough corrosion to gum up the works. |

it just scares me when once it starts (cold) the engine light is still on for a few seconds, then it goes off. |

The light staying on for a few seconds is normal behavior. I am at work and don't have my service manual with me, but it is in there... |

This is another reason for setting yourself up with a VDSTS> If your battery is less than a full 12 you can expect this kind of behavior from your start system. And it's allways a good idea to keep your battery on a tender through the stored time in the off season , even if you keep your precious in the house. My 99 X1 does exactly the same thing if I have even the slightest drop in battery, nothing beats a full charge! |

My VDSTS shows a low voltage condition at start, hence the red light. of course the ECM throws the code semi-randomly. I'd bet on Hootowl's diagnosis, the starter probably has some corrosion in it. i cleaned up the solenoid area, didn't seem to help at all. I'd bet a new starter would make it go away. An awful lot of work for an annoyance |

I have been watching my voltage when I start my S3. If the static voltage of the battery with every think off is above 12.6 VDC during starting it drops to about 9 - 9.3 volts. If the static voltage is lower than 12.6 to 12.3 volts I generally see 8 volts during starting. Joe |

My '01 X-1 "learned" to do the same thing. Turn key on, wait for CEL light to go out, and hit starter. CEL light would come on once in a while, and go back out. Stopped doing that when I replaced the 5+ year old battery. As others have mentioned, battery tender. |

battery acble was loose. i just replaced my speedometer sensor and had to take the battery out, though i put the cables back on pretty tight but i guess not. i made sure they are darn tight this time, good thing they are easy to get to! thanks guys |

If its not broke Dont try to fix it. The best way to break something is to mess with something. Mine has started like that since i got it with new or old Batt. It is a good idea to put the Batt. tender on when parking for extended times. |
