I have a 2002 X1 with a V&H slip on and a custom K&N with a venturi cone, the ECM is stock. I took a trip from Lubbock to Houston and back, about 1200 miles round trip, and it ran great with good gas mileage except for a few things...

I can not give it WOT with out it sputtering real bad, if I let off the tiniest bit it will run great and I can still get to about 130+ mph, but not 100% WOT.

It is starting to jump out of second gear when I shift from first. It has happened a few times now when I am just cruzin or racing some buddies. and it only happens when I go from first to second, not when I am down shifting and it doesn't happen in any other gear.

ANY IDEAS??? Thanks in advance.

OH! and also...

I think the power may be down just a little. The other day I couldn't pull wheelies as easily as I used to, usually I get to about 4000rpm in first gear and from there they are real easy, but now i really have to beat up on it to get the front when to just leave the ground! I quit trying all together till i get this fixed.

there's a clip on my sportster that holds a spring to the detent plate in the transmission. It broke after I tried to many wheelies. Luckily I was right by the shop when it happened so I got it there before the spring fell into the gears and ate up my tranny. The bike did the same stuff before this happened, and I believe the Buells use the same setup so that retaining clip may be weak. Not for sure but just an idea. I have an S2 as well now and one of the first performance mods I plan is a billet trap door because it replaces that clip with a screw (at least on the Baker unit). Hope this helps.

I will look into that, I had some one tell me there is an adjustment of the shift mechanism INSIDE the tranny, is tis true and could it help or fix this problem?

That doesn't explain the sputtering at WOT, my 1998 S1 does that. The reason I ask is because I will be ripping through the gears and then all of a sudden it dies off and sputters so bad that it throws my weight forward, then if I roll back the throttle a tad bit, off we go again just as fast as ever. It doesn't happen every time, 90% of the time would be a good estimate. I've checked intake seals, the seal between the carb and manifold, and my exhaust seals are not leaking. Not trying to hijack your post, Just trying to see some opinions on the cause of the sputtering. Thanks!

The one time I encountered that on a fuelie bike, it was a bad throttle position sensor.

This does not explain the S1, though. Bad VOES maybe?

Jumping out of gear could be a bent shift fork, worn shift dogs, a bad detent plate, or others. Stop riding it like that and fix that, or it will get way more expensive.

WOT? what kinda rpms are you running? is it cutting out at wot at the redline or wot all the time? Wot all the time is a fuel injector issue. Most like tps

I guess I should have been more specific, it will start cutting out at about 4500rpm or more when I'm at WOT.

Mine does the exact same thing, It cuts out around 4-4.5k RPM, and when I ease off a bit it will run hard to redline, or as close as I want to get to it. I have never messed with the VOES system, is it difficult to check? Thanks!

I have a bad feeling the timing is out or maybe a slightly clogged fuel filter?

I really appreciate ya'lls input, I used to call the buell tech at my local dealer because he was pretty cool about helping me out but i now feel like a douche because i know they're too busy to diagnose over the phone.

There is no VOES on the Fuel injected bikes.
The computer depends upon the TPS and RPMs to calculate how much manifold vacuum there is.

If the timing is fungled up, it will ruin you fuel economy as well as your power output.

The sensor in the "points cover" is the only way our bikes know when it's time to squirt an injector or drop a spark in the hole.

I had a monkey in Oklahoma City tweak my timing by ear!
Fuel economy = 32MPG
and no more wheelies until I got home to an actual trained tech.

I just noticed that you don't have a race ECU on there. You really should with that intake and exhaust. It's probably just running really lean.

Get the tps reset if you already haven't. If that doesn't help check the throttle body itself or the injectors. the TPS reset will settle out a lot of issues with the fuel injection. My battery died while i was riding, a new battery and the x-1 ran like crap. a tps resolved the issue. Start with the simple stuff. unless you messed with the timing or something else, that isn't the issue. Did it just start doing this or has it done it al along? if it just popped up, i would say a tps reset is in order or a fuel injection problem. what do your throttle cable look like? mine were worn right before my throttle body shot craps. check the butterfly on the throttle body there are 2 bolts on the small shaft that flips the the butterfly. If that shaft is starting to twist it will do the same thing until it breaks. then it really runs like shit until the whole throttle bodyneeds replaced. A typical problem with the early fuel injected bikes

If it where a carburetor I would say you are lean on the main jet. Check with American Sport Bike for their tuning software or check out ECMSPY.

I have a cable on its way so I can get ecmspy hooked up, I plan to reset the tps first and see how things go. I wouldn't necessarily look towards my non-race ECM as the culprit, I've had this set up for about a year now and these problems have just started recently (unless it has been building up over time) and i had my dealer tell me that it isn't running lean with that set up. My cables are about 6 months old and the throttle body and intake seals are in good working order.

I disconnected my battery before I took that trip to Houston, I took it out and put it on a trickle charger over night because it had sat for a month or so. If disconnecting the battery can mess all that up, I think we might have found the problem!

No. The TPS data is stored on non-volatile ram in the computer.

Disconnecting the battery does nothing besides resetting the trip odometer.

Erratic stuff like this can be a bad temp sensor too, they will become erratic. The tps MUST BE SET at a cetain STABLE temp.

My bike was doing the same thing at WOT last year, you can check the archives and read all about it. It turned out to be a bad ECM. I purchased a used race ECM from a member here and it was the culprit. I ordered a new one from the dealer and all my troubles were solved.
