Was riding to work this morning... After about 100km, while running at approx 5000rpm (140mph) the engine suddenly slowed down drastically and eventually died..

I thought that it was a bad spark so I took out the plug to check and noticed there was no compression at all in the cylinder. Plug seemed OK however, though OILY.

So I took a ride back home with the engine running at one cylinder (my oh my did it take time at 40mph!).. Once home I noticed that the engine leaked oil from every corner and crack and seal and nut... As well as on my whole right leg and foot. Out of muffler, on headers etc.
There was even oil inside the air intake!

I am not even sure I want to know what is wrong now.. I reckon it is something really gritty and expensive. Maybe I will need to change the whole cylinder and piston (right word)?

This bike will go to history for sure.. Right now I hate everything Buell/HD.

PS: might it be related to the fact that I just installed new muffler and a RACE ECM?

Or am I just cursed?

Betcha you popped a head gasket...

My buddy's popped when taking off from an intersection...

With no H/G, it was pumping **** all over the place, and once the H/G went, the base gasket went as well...

SO...

Clean it off, and look inside the fins, and see if you can find a spot where oil has weeped, or blown out.....

I know the export models have different final drive gearing but if your X1 runs 140MPH at 5000 RPM, myself and everyone else on this forum wants to know your secret.
My 2000 X1 at 100 MPH is turning 4800 RPM.

Did you have a large cloud of blue smoke behind you when this happened? Is your muffler full of oil? If so I can provide pictures of what you will more than likely find. I think the euro model runs a 29/55 pulley setup.

If there's oil in the intake, I'm going to guess that it either dropped a valve, a valve seat, and/or holed a piston (And filled intake with oil through breathers.)

Yes I think there was a cloud.. Muffler is full of oil and so is intake and every other thinkable place.. I reckon it is the worst - bad piston.

Cylinder is full of oil.

I really don't know what to do next.. Bike was about 10 000USD (EU prices are a bit different from US ones eh!!) and I spent about 2000USD on repairs the last two months... And a mechanic did a guesstimate for fixing cylinder that landed at about 4000USD

I can get a brand new XB12s or Ducati for this kind of money..

I think it is phenomenal, the amount of trouble this bike is giving.

My best estimate? Either some one half-assed it back together in a major way, and stuck you with it, or you are extremely abusive to your bikes.

This is absolutely amazing to me.

Well I guess Harley School payed off for me after all. if you installed those parts, the muffler and the race ecm and didnt have the tps reset right then you could have gotten a lean condition because of leaking intake seals or other problem. A lean condition can burn your piston typically right down the intake side thrust surface causing a "hole" and thats where you got the oil is my thoughts.

If most of the piston is there, chances are the missing pieces are melted into the cylinder wall. If thats the case you do the following.

use muratic acid to eat up the alum that is melted into the cyl. If cycl is ok and not scored really bad have it bored to its limit and install two new pistons. 2 pistons 100 bucks? Second inspect valves and valves seats. If ok then good if ya want to be anal have the seats resurfaced. This is typicalley 50 bucks a hole in the USA. Valve guides should be ok, if not they should be replaced with new for no more money. just clean up the valve and make sure it is true. Flush out crank area and check breather for debri. While your in the cam area buy a new oil pump gear for 50 bucks. Buy some gaskets and some good luck for another hundred bucks and you left with reassemble labor. All of that is under $500.00 bucks if you can find a brother. Cant imagine more than $1000 done in someones garage who knows their stuff. Far from $4000.00

Sounds like the exact same thing that happened to me on my bike. This was a while ago when I first picked up my bike and had no idea what the previous owner had done to the bike. It was running very lean and I "holed" or detonated my rear piston. Like Mmmi_grad said it isin't too expensive to get this fixed yourself. I bored both my cylinders, got new pistons, and had my heads cleaned and ported for around 700 dollars. Start tearing your bike down and see what kind of damage you can find.

Here is the damage I found in my rear cylinder.



Also if the damage is too severe in one of your cylinders. I have an extra cylinder "jug" and piston I can sell you for cheap. Mike

Oh god this seems to be such a time bandit! And bike season just started....
I am not sure what I will do yet, it feels like even if I fix this in 2 months something else will break and so on and on and on and ...
