thanks again to buellsrule on badweb. my x1 exhaust + drummer came in yesterday, and i shoehorned it in today.

here is the 'before' photo with my stock header and V&H muffler

it took 3 tries to get the exhaust hammer massaged properly so that it fit with minimal frame contact.

the first go around had the exhaust wedged against the frame so tightly that my entire bike almost rattled me to death trying to do a quick trip into town and back.. off it came once more to make more modification.

after 3 times of bolting and unbolting, i was pro status on carefully twisting it into place and then back out again. the intake and the front belt cover had to come off each time.

here are the power-swirl-ultra-flow-stimulation dents that were performed to the new header

not shown in the above photo is the brass plug i used to block the O2 sensor hole. i had one laying around from previous various projects involving on board compressed air for my jeep that just so happened to fit wonderfully!

i spent a bit of time modding the front bracket and the rear bracket of the muffler to make it fit properly. for the front, i opened up the hole making it more of a sliding hole for the bolt since the hole didnt line up by about 3/8" towards the engine too much for the new muffler.

for the rear i made a quick 3/16" plate extension that dropped the stock location down to the muffler clamp by 3". i just picked a number for the length that seemed like it would make the muffler hang level with the bike.

finished product.

i scratched up the fancy black paint on the header a bit so i covered it with black primer temporarily. im gunna head over to summit racing (we have a retail location in reno (which gets me into a lot of $$trouble$$)), to pick up some black high temp header paint (since krylon doesnt like 500+ degrees) first thing in the AM.

impressions... the frame still contacts the exhaust a bit so now there is more vibration throughout the mid range RPMs. im not SUPER happy about them, but it will do. its not AS BAD as my neighbors S1 so ill shut my mouth on that. the power is about the same compared to the 2" collector on the factory pipe and the V&H muffler. i dont notice any seat of the pants power gains. both mufflers are a straight through design with no baffles.. just sound deadening material lining the inner walls. what i DO like is the newfound throaty-ness and the bigger tip- i believe that those two positives are linked.. the throaty-ness likely comes from the fact that the exhaust is resonating through a bigger can and the tone gets lower, plus the exhaust air stream is a bit more noticable on my left foot when i am at a stop light- i can feel my bike breathing on me! i now no longer worry about buell leg. my pants no longer will get burned by the stupid bend and worthless black guard thing that has cooked all of my dickies pants PLUS my alpinestars ballistic riding pants now that its completely out of the way... COOL!

it was a worth-while mod. im happy that i have one of the (now) rare and discontinued drummer's and the black looks really cool contrasting with my white frame and matching my black paint much more closely. quite unique.

I'm just curious.

Why?

S2 stuff isn't that hard to come up with, is it?

In a word? Yes.

S2 exhaust is weird. It's like a 2" race header - all the stock headers dumped out going across the front of the bike; all the race headers dumped out after the turn to the rear. S2 headers are 2", but they also make the turn to the back of the bike before dumping out.

Early "S" bend exhausts will fit and give the more "common" outlet positioning. As you can see, the later "T" bend pipes need some massaging. The system in this thread was recently sold as a package and a great way to get an original Drummer.

I kept my stock S2 header in all its hand-welded glory. You can see it's a series of U bends and straight pieces welded together to make an exhaust, I love it. I added a cheap auto-parts 2" to 2.5" spacer to the header outlet and run a Buell race muffler made for an S1W with race header.

see the first thread 'X1 exhaust on S2".

rat defined the reasoning pretty well. i really only wanted the drummer. the header was part of the deal though, and it would not have been easy to make the drummer fit with the stock exhaust. sure there are a couple options out there to get the 2.5" inlet, but im not really interested in searching around for it.

i decided to at least give the X1 exhaust a shot on the fact that the X1 exhaust doesnt interfere with pant legs at all. i was looking into options for my stock exhaust previously to fix it (like header wrap), but this appears to be a great solution.

i love the way it looks!
