Looking at corbin's site I see that they have an after market seat for what they call a "twin tail" option.

I'm a bit confused as I have, to my knowledge never seen an S1 with a larger seating configuration.

I was wondering if this would mate with the stock S1 seat pan / tail section on my bike, or if "twin Tail " refers to a different tail section option that may have been offered by Buell at the time.

Cheers

That is a different tail section
It consists of a Tail section, seat and bracket for taillight.
A really nice one just went off ebay and sold for like $350, I sold one that was primered with the seat but without the bracket for $150.

It was a factory option in the 1997 Buell accessories catalog.

Here's a picture of my '98 S1 with the twin tail. The seat is noticeably longer, and no more comfortable, than a standard S1 seat.

Here is a picture of my son's '96 S1 single tail with the slightly more comfortable custom seat.

I've heard that the Twintail is early-M2 parts bin sharing. True?

The M2 tail is entirely different from the Twintail. in fact, the M2 tail will not fit the S1 without modifying the frame. The seat itself is also different between the Twintail and the M2 tail.

Tombo, are you meaning the early M2, with the narrow seat? Or all M2's in general?

Jos, neither the older narrow tail or 99 up tail will fit an S1 without frame modification. the frame hoop on an S1 comes up at a steeper angle. I have seen modified frames that have required cutting and re-welding. The Twintail seat is even narrower than the early M2 seat. I had one and installed a Corbin on the Twintail which was significantly wider and added a lot of comfort either the stock solo tail or Twintail seats. If you look closely at a twintail you will notice that there is less "shelf" on the back and the seat narrows considerably at the back as well.

You'll be looking for a long time. The Twin Tail (I have the catalog here) was introduced at the dealer show in 1997.

It MAY however bit a 1996 S-1, but it will have 1997 part numbers.

Will a 98 S1 twin tail fairing fit on a 98 M2 sub frame without cutting up the M2

>>> You'll be looking for a long time.<<<

So it's safe to assume that the twintail setup is pretty rare?

I've recently joined the Tuber family. I've had 2 XB's ('06 9R and '08 XT), just got a 98 S1 that I ADORE, but it's got the Twintail setup on it, and I'd MUCH rather have the solo tail and a Corbin (or whatever seat ya'll recommend that's most comfy). I kinda wanna hang onto the twintail setup so I can put the bike back to stock if I need to, but I know I'm NEVER going to carry a passenger or put the twintail back on after I've got the solo setup. I'm just thinking out loud here, but I assume that someone out there would be eager to trade their solo setup for my twintail?
