Thx...did they use the CV carb and same ignition system as a 90 sporty?
Also, do the last 4 digits of the VIN determine the production # of the bike....

There was one product upgrade.

The bike in the photo is a significant color. . . Curraco Blue.

Parts and service manuals are available.

Don't put too much stock in the numbers.

Court...Thx...Could you post a photo of a stock 1990?..Left and right sides.
Did they have a rear chain guard?
Some I see pics of have a chrome one, and in a 1989/90 sales brochure they dont have one at all....Hmmm
This bike is stock other than the rear shock has bin changed to an enclosed showa.
Looks like a 1st recall design...
Im in the works on a deal with the guy on it...Shows 10,000 miles...Its Value?...$??????Hankb

Did they have a rear chain guard?

Yes. Metal.

The first "recall", although it was nothing more than a nice letter from Erik (I saved mine), was the "diaper pin" in the Gambler rear brake.

That shock will work fine.

If you get it for $6,000 you've got a good deal.

The bikes had chain guards. They were black from the factory.

That's working off my MEMORY. If it gets critical let me know and I can check some build sheets.

(Sorry link was broken).

Above is a standard 1991 RS1200-5 (XL1200 5 speed, single disk, WP rear shock and WP forks) otherwise same as your 1990 bike.

The guard is a modified Harley one. We have permission to buy then direct from the manufacture and the we cut, welded and powder coated them.

The last three digits sorta reflect the build order BUT, we would get 25 of those VIN things stamped at a time and they were supposed to go out the shop in order and they were supposed to be build in order BUT shit happens. 001 would indicate a very early one (unless of course the sticker dropped to the bottom of stuff in the drawer where we keep them and didn't get found for w few weeks), the actual build sheet would have start and end dates and could be compared to others to find where it ranked.

Many brochure bikes are shot before the soup is done.

Witness the Yellow S-1 on the cover of CYCLE WORLD in June 1996.

It's not, by the way, the magazines fault. Look no further than the 1997 Buell catalog.

If you want to hear a hilarious story ask me about the 1997 M-2 Cyclone photo bike at Homecoming.

Don't forget the Cycle World October 1993 S2. It also had alot of preproduction items ie seat, rear shock, front brake caliper mounting, dash sticker, timing cover, top triple tree...

hmmmmm......

One question you might never here around here.

"Do you know your bikes born on date?"

Then again the old guard will have the birth certificates nearby.

I know the "born on, shipped on and paint mix" of your bike.

>>>Don't forget the Cycle World October 1993 S2.

Point well made and if you look in the book you'll see a photo of that bike with the foundation work underway for the first new Buell factory in the background.

There were some fascinating stories about that bike but I can't recall which ones I told in the book.

Remind me . . . . next time we cross paths Todd. . . to tell you where the kid slept all night.

By the way . . . for the benefit of those new to the World of Buell . . . Mr. S2 Pengy for YEARS served as the unofficial Buell Archivist.

Todd logged and cataloged everytime a Buell appeared anywhere. Dave Gess was busy promoting and producing Buells . . I was running through 44 states singing the praises and giving demo rides and I could always rely on Todd to come through whenever I had one of those "I know I saw it somewhere" moments.

Some time ago he sent me the bulk of the collection, I integrated it with mine and my dear SCU went through 9 cases of magazine and prepared an Excel spreadsheet if everytime that PPP, BMC or BMcC appeared.

Todd's been in the game since I can recall and it thrills me everytime I see him post.

I actually rode an RS-1200 through the Rockie's just a couple years ago . . . I highly reccomend it.

Let me get through my last final on May 12th and I'll get on your stuff. I still owe a couple other folks manuals as well.

When you get time send me your VIN and let me pull the original build files and let's see just what's special about YOUR bike. Always fun to see who built it, when it was built, shipped, to where and so forth.

If you are at Homecoming be sure to let me know ahead of time. It'd be fun for you to visit with the person who designed your RS-1200 and also the person who built it. They will both be there.

If you do ride it I may need to repeat my "what's special about a Buell RS-1200 Westwind" drivel. You will find that, even with identical geometry, it rides totally different from an S2.

The RS is pure elegance in motion.
