The manual states that the oil tank holds 2 quarts "including the 4oz poured into the filter". Does that mean the total system capacity is 2 quarts? I put 2 quarts total in when I changed it (standard size filter) and the oil doesn't even touch the stick. I had the H-D dealer change the oil the first time because I had just bought the bike and wanted them to check it over ($$$), after which it was about half way between the marks. I never had any problem with blowing oil and the air filter assembly had only a small amount of spooge after 2000 miles, so I don't think it will hurt to add more. Any advice?

Having just dealt with over filled oil myself I think I can help you. Don't over fill it! There is one major problem here. The best way to describe it is that the dipstick lies on these bikes. I forget exactly what the deal is but it is something along the lines of buell using the same dipstick for all early models even though the oil tank capacity is different. (Someone correct me if I am wrong.) Anyway the dealership put in too much oil in my bike and on the first long ride, pressure built up in the oil tank and blew the cap off, which made a huge mess. I though my bike was destroyed at first when I saw the oil everywhere. Eventually I realized what the problem was and drained all the oil and started fresh with just under 2 quarts. If you have around 2 quartz you are ok.

Make sure your engine is warm, like change it right after a ride, or at least a good warm up idle, then check your level immediately after adding, if you let the bike sit, or change the oil cold you will definitely over fill it, I have always just added until it reads about 1/3 of the way between lines.

Cannot comment on Quentin's statements besides you don't want to overfill your oil tank, it's messy.

Read the owners manual. Check the oil when the engine is at full operational temperature (after, not before, a ride).

Remember, these are DRY SUMP engines. 2 qts. is all you need during an oil change and check periodically from there.
