I'm getting ready to change my starter gasket and I figured while I was in there possibly adjusting the shifter. Anyone know if you can adjust the shift pawl without removing the primary, or is the clutch basket in the way?

Can't remember, but since you've gotta pull the cover to do the starter, you'll know shortly...

Actually, I'm pretty sure the clutch hub has to come off, unless you can bend a rod of the appropriate diameter to reach the shift drum area.

Rotor and clutch both have to come off.
Disconnect the clutch cable remove the wellnut and remove the release bearing snap ring to gain access to the 1-1/16 clutch hub nut,left hand thread btw.

If you don't have the lock tool to keep the sprockets from turning you can make one out of a piece of Aluminum 1/4x2"x 4-3/8 long and bevel the edges with a file or sander to approximate the tooth profile..


Place tranny in 3RD gear and insert a #32 (.116 DIA.) drill bit shank end first to check clearance.

If not within spec. loosen the two 7/16 nuts and rotate the shift shaft assy. to tighten or loosen the clearance.

I did mine last Friday when I installed the updated chain tensioner.

There is an update shifter pawl that makes shifting a little less effort.

A little less effort is an understatement.......it's a world of difference!
While you're in there, pay close attention to the c clip that holds the shift pawl on. They have a history of cracking and dropping off.(bad).
Also, check your shift drum pins. They have a tendency to back out. This can be easily remedied with red LocTite while you're in there. Take your time and do the adjustment carefully. You'll be amazed at how much easier it will shift.
If you haven't updated to the new primary shoe, now is the time to do it!
