I have a 2002 M2 with 8000mls. I came back from a good ride and noticed some light clunking noise in neutral at low RPMs. When I pull the clutch or rev it goes away. I checked the prior owners records and it doesn't look like he changed the tranny oil. What do you guys use???

Creature X1, your running standard engine oil in your trans? I always thought the wet clutch needed an additive similar to the GM posi rear additive. Is Amsoil synthetic? I have heard very good things about Amsoil! Thanks for the feed back but now with everybody using different oils I still undecided

harley syn3 is my preference.
if you are undecided may as well stick with something from the manufacturer that way you know it has been designed with your particular applications in mind.

"if you are a long ways from home, its nice to be able to get mobil one at many parts stores..."

This is the way I've chosen the oils I've used in my cars and bikes since 1980. Castrol GTX in the cars and Mobil 1 for the bikes. I can get both these oils at most supermarkets if I have to.

+1 on the Sport Trans, I figure they knew what they were doing when they put it in there in the first place and I've always heard to stick with the same thing. BUT, don't go to the stealership and ask for it, it is now marketed as Formula+.

Sport Trans is no more (though some dealers might have left-over stock). It has been replaced with Formula+. Seems to work the same. For what its worth, I replaced the Formula+ in my primary with Syn 3 at my last oil change and I'll be switching back at my next oil change. The Syn3 seems to make changing gears a little less smooth than the Formula+.

in my v-rods and harleys, i used to run the 15w-50 mobil one, red cap in everything and many claim its the same as the 20-50 v-twin... i never had a problem..however, recently some members of the v-rod forum claim they are getting clutch slipping with he 15w-50, as its not wet clutch certified... so, even though ive never had a problem in over 200,000 miles of use, i started putting v-twin in my primary, because im bored!..i still run the red cap in my motor...maybe its not red cap anymore, but you get my drift...

The Sport-Trans or Formula+ (same thing BTW) is actually very interesting. It isn't even really a GL oil. It is actually a form of hydraulic fluid w/ very unique properties. There is a nice article on it at the X1-files. If you look at your owners manual, it specifies and insists on Sport-Trans, not just recommends it. Thats all I needed to see, besides, it has worked well for me and see no reason to change. For the motor the manual says any quality oil will do.

I use Syn3 in all my Buells, all locations. No issues at all, improved shifting in all cases, and while not "supermarket-available", still pretty easy to get hands on in a pinch even if I'm out of town.

Mobil 1 v-twin, both holes, no problems, shifts great, no clutch issues, my riding includes drag racing....

nothing wrong with using formula+ either...

Syn3 made me think the fan on my Uly was broken - it hardly comes on now after the change at 1,000 miles.

I have tried many different fluids in the transmission of my S3, and Formula + seems to work the best for me.

Valvolene 20W50 synthetic in the engine.
