Ok, got the race ecm installed on my bike. it doesnt want to idle very good. It started fine last night when i went to work, i just had to controll the idle with the throttle. Cruised about 4 miles to work above 3k rpms. came back out in the morning and the temp had dropped from 50 to 35! got on the bike and it wouldnt start. it would pop once in a while, but wouldnt start. so i caught a ride home. Went back out this afternoon when it was 45 out, got on the bike, cranked and started right up!

Sooo, WTH? why wouldnt it start in the morning? too cold for the race ecm? i havent had the TPS reset yet, would that do it?

Ive also heard differant things about getting it dyno tuned. One thing is that the ecm's are kind of self learning, and tuning them is a waste of money because they will change the map on their own?

soo, whats up with this race ecm??? im lost here...

I'm at work, the short answers are.

Unless the tuner understands the Buell EFI
its best left alone,

1. TPS 0 reset, when you place a new ecm in the bike you must reset the throttle position sensor zero. and re adjust the idle stop

2. the AFV "learn" bit is related to the o2 sensor the intake air sensor engine temperature and an "aproximate fueling value" applied to the map.

the "map" does not change perse

1 obtain a copy of ECM spy or VSDS spy is free but you must make the cable. [ search the board for this ] the usb end is about 30.00$
so
2 try tps reset
3 warm the bike up and adjust idle

you may have another issue

my race ecm is abit of a bear to start on some cold mornings.

once sorted the low end and mid range are much better than the stock one.

i dont think i have another issue. cause it runs fine. ill get the tps reset. then ill adjust the idle screw. gonna just have the HD dealership do the tps reset. i have no knowledge to be messing with ecm spy, i know enough to get myself in trouble and thats it. so the tps reset is the only thing i need it for, and the hd dealership shouldnt charge much more than 30 for a reset should they?

Also, i called the only local guy that does streetbikes dyno tuning... he said it would take 8 to 10 hours to tune it??????? cause it was very involved. and seemed to think that i needed to put on a power commander. wth?

Before worrying about anything else, get the TPS reset, it will not run right without that done.

I dont recomend the PC had one gave it to chase before spy came out.
PC is a stop gap and is not needed with ECM spy

There is a tuning guide available on ukbeg
and with ecm spy that gives some insites on what and how to do this,

you may spend that much time for a tune.

My 02 get the tps reset, and ride it a while if the starting stays bad check back in.

later..

my big question is getting it dyno tuned. is it a waste of time? possible? does it remap itself after getting tuned therefore wasting money on the dyno tune session?

I called Al at American Sport Bike, he said that the only thing "important" is to set the TPS. HD wants one hour of labor for a five minute job, but it is imperative to re-set the TPS.

When I installed the race ecm I had some cold starting troubles, but learned to just use the idle adjuster to dial up a little more rpm on cold mornings. Just use it like a choke and no problems...

The ECM does not remap itself.
The AFV "air fuel value" reads the O2 sensor when the bike is run at part throttle above 3000 rpms in 3rd gear (I believe) or higher.
It then applies a factor to the entire map. For example if it is a nice high pressure day it may see that the mixture is slightly lean so it may go from 100 to 105 to compensate.
That is, is goes from 100% of the existing map to 105% of the existing map. In other words it adds 5% fuel across the board to the entire map.
Dyno tuning can be great if you have one of the several ways available to adjust a Buell ECM.
From what pretty much everyone who has tried one says, a PC is not worth doing.
Personally, I am adding an O2 sensor to my front pipe and I am going to data log while riding and remap from there.
No I have never done this before, but after a lot of reading, making a cable and asking a few questions, I am ready to give it a try.
Get your bike running right before you consider next steps.
Mine starts fine even below freezing with the Race ECM.

I've had a race ECM for all of my X1's 82,000 miles.
It always starts!
All I have to do is crack the throttle just a tiny bit to light it off.
I then have to play with the gas a bit to maintain 1500 RPM.
I have my idle set a bit low so it won't idle on its own until it's warmed up.

Dnchevyman,

Once you get the tps reset it is a night and day difference.
