I went to fire up the 95 S2 on Wed to leave for work.
Click, click click, dead battery, no startie.
I took my son's 96 S2 instead.
Wed evening I did the usual checks, no stator output.
It's not shorted to ground on either lead and I get about 1.2 ohm reisitance across the leads. I think the resistance reading is due to a film of oil on the connector.
In either case, the stator is bad.
As luck would have it a dealer in town had one in stock! $115 minus MVP discount...
I sure wish I knew what killed it. I replaced it back in 05 and only have about 6000 miles on it.

Guess what I'm doing this afternoon... (plus is SNOWING outside!).

Buy one made by Accel. They come with a lifetime warranty. Cheaper than the Harley one too. I have had to replace the stator in every Buell I have owned. Good time to check the regulator too.

Yeah Jon, the 96 is still fine...
I changed out the stator today, man do they STINK when they burn up. I'd forgotten how bad it is. My friggin hands are going to stink for days!
I thought about the Accel but didn't feel like waiting for it to show up.

Aaron, I was going to blame the toasted stator on the Mobil 1 75/90 but after seeing it I'm not so sure. They have gone to a rev "C" for the latest stator, it looks to be much better constructed.
The one that toasted has some interesting issues with the potting material around where the wires attach.
The new style uses a new method. I'll post pictures tomorrow.
Looks like the potting epoxy broke down and allowed one of the wires to stress flex and open up. Never know for sure.

I did refill with the new version of "Sport Tran". I hope it works as good as the Mobile 1 for shifting smoothness.

Since I was in there, I also changed out the starter gasket with the new metal/rubber style.
I also removed the spring plate in the clutch pack and replaces it with the requisite 2 steel - 1 fiber plates.
The spring plate was getting a bit loose, not sure how much longer it would have been before it caused problems.

John, no problem with the regulator, nice flat 14V when the bike is running.

Tomorrow is rocker box gasket day. Since I rebuilt the top end (less than 200 miles ago) both RB gaskets are leaking.
Never had that happen before, I used Cometic instead of the stock HD metal versions.
Never had problems with either one before.. I have a couple of the HD versions so I'll change them out.

please post picks,, would like to see the area in question.. i work for a electronics company designing and building there production equipment. so i have a little experience in this destructive area.. if you do not like the "sport trans" i would suggest going with the syn3.. i was so happy with the results in the primary that i am now switching to it in the engine also.. not to say that the sport-trans isnt good also. both functioned perfectly well.. i have know of several people having stator problems.. all were using gear oils in there primaries..
its funny how often oil topics come up on other sights also.. like on a triumph car site. if you use gl5 gear oil in your trany it will eat out your syncro rings and with the ever increasing requirements put on auto oils to reduce addatives,, zinc and other crucial elements have been greatly reduced in "automotive oils" now we have been switching to diesel and motorcycle oils to keep from wiping out tappets and lifters.. very touchy stuff.. but now i am just rambeling.. glad to hear your bike is going back together..
ps have also noted that my cosmetic rocker box gasket on the front cylinder is starting to "swell" and work its way out.. think i may be trying the harley metal ones ,soon, also let me know how they work out for you..aaron

OK, Here's a few pictures. I'm not too happy with the shot of the old one, I'll take another clearer one.

This is the old one, looks like it got a bit hot at the connector site.

This is the new style, notice the plastic "lead holder".

Here's the two of them side by side.

New one installed.
