This is an artists rendition of what I have done to my M2. I bastardized the cracked tail section after securing an uncracked good one. I would not have done this without having replacement stock body work (in the right color) This is not my bike but mine is just like it. Right now mine sits in the garage up on a log with the rear wheel removed for new tires and brake pads. Like this abbreviated tail? It may never see the light of day. Eric

it looks okay, but i think you can do better. Cut the fairing in the same spot from bottom to top, but angle the line towards the front of the bike. It will flow better IMO.

Im doing this same thing to mine as soon as I find a decent blue tail.

I've been thinkin about following a line like Torquemonster said. Basically follow the line of the seat and cut it parallel, rounding out the corner like factory. hmmmm... I have a red tailsection i may have to take the jigsaw to....

quick and dirty....not the best scheme, or exactly what im doing to mine, but you get the picture.

If you ever saw Eengler's flat black M2, you'd see that his lines jived really well. That was one sweet tail chop. Scour the old school archives. Its there somewhere.

I can, but the pc im using has rudimentary tools. Heres a rough cut loosely based on my scheme.

keep in mind some guts will show.
I think this gives it more of an S1 appearance without having to chop the frame.

I can't cut my tailsection because it's got Erik's signature on it. I wound up leaving the whole tail section off and modifiying the tail lite/fender to fit closer to the seat after experimenting with earlier bodywork.

The pics of the naked version are further down the thread. I don't intend on ever putting the stock bodywork back on, but I may change the seat to something else in the future.

I like the new look, but I like the extra space my boots have better.

Cutting the tail section has been done (with great results) before, btw.

Thanks for the idea Engler. I didn't cut mine, but you gave me the idea to experiment with the look. My props to you, man.

I saw this cut job on ebay for sale right now. Not my bike and I don't like the final results. However I think there is a happy medium in what was posted previously here.

The ebay bike is a prime candidate for a S1 tailsection. I wouldnt feel bad chopping a rear thats already been chopped.

One thing I love about this board is how we can delicately let people know our feelings and opinions. HA HA HA

I wonder if that was done using a Ginsu 2000 knife?

for the time being, i went back to the full rear plastic, it puts more heat on your leg without it. Sitting in stop and go traffic in the south, things get pretty hot. I have some poor quality photos that i can upload this evening if my camera still has any juice left.

CF heat shields? where do i buy them? my 2.5 header is dented and that would cover it up.

As I review earlier posts the flat black bike was sold and made into a redneck chopper. So sad. I am a redneck that believes I would have left well enough alone. PTPF (Lamo Mr.T reference)

i want to do something similar to that on torquemonsters pic, whats the best way to cut the seat unit, whats the best tool to use to produce the best cut with as little damage to the unit???
there is a gap between the front of the seat unit and rear of the tank so want to cut some of the front of the seat unit to get rid of the unsightly poor fit, also cutting it i think would so improve the look, and my right boot rubs on the lower edge of the unit,so trimming it also would stop that,

I used a DeWalt cut-off wheel with a thin cut-off "blade" to cut off my tail section. I waited 2 years to try this because I was afraid of splintering / cracking near the cut, but one day i said WTF and went for it. The cut-off wheel sort of melts its way through the plastic (almost instantly, by the way) resulting in a nice, smooth cut with no sharp edges, cracks or splinters.

"I saw this cut job on ebay for sale right now."

The bike can be saved, but the idiot that did it needs to have his tools taken away from him.

I do have a pic, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how to reduce the file size to make it downloadable. I'm an engineer, not a computer geek -
