Good luck. I had the same problem with my 1999 S3 when it was new. The dealer told me that the oil i was going thru was not out of line. i took my motor apart at 3000 miles and was the same thing. When i took it to my machine shop they told me the cylinders were so out of round that he couldn't see how it ran as good as it did. I bored mine 30 over no problem's in the last 20k.
mine lost a part of the ring.

ya. i have literally 1 if not 2 pennies with thick of gunk. I will get pictures of them later this week. also the piston rings are fine, but the side of each piston rubbed pretty bad.

like I said I will get more pictures as I can get them.

oh and dont try to wire brush gunk off pistons. I tried for about 20 minutes and they dont look much better. o well thank god for the big bore kit...lol

Only time I've seen anything that nice was when the wrist pin backed out of a SBC race 350...machined a nice groove down the side of the bore. You sure you don't have a cracked ring? Or maybe a pair of bad wrist pin bushings (you did say front and rear, right)? Where is the groove in the cylinder - front, back, pushrod side or primary side? Can't tell from the way you're holding the jug...

My year-old '77 Shovelhead did that, at Sturgis. Rode it home 900 miles that way.

The piston pin keeper was never installed at the factory, so it slid out and machined a nice groove. Harley goodwilled me the parts to fix it, even though it was just out of warranty.thumbsup

i will check when I can get back up to the shop, but yes it is both jugs and I think it is on the left side, if you are sitting on the bike. also I know for a fact that all rings were still in tack and none looked wore down, cause this is what we thought first happened.

I will try to get pictures of the pistons and everything else.
