I have the two top cover pieces off, and the leak is the small metal gasket below the plate that seems to cover the rockers themselves - the next step to dissassemble is to remove what looks like 4 black bolts, 4 hex head bolts similar to the outside covers, and some silver I 'm guessing 3/8th bolts - this I guess holds on the rockers?

Am I doing anything dangerous here? Also what torque do I put these bolts back in at?
I can't get a manual in time. Thanks!

chuck

You really need to get a manual for the M2... but this should help. It's the online manual for an S1.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/Manuals/S1_1 996-1997_Service/intro.pdf

It's always in the Knowledge Vault and it's free.

The S1 specs are the same for all Tube-frame bikes. Remove the 5 smaller screws first (Two are allens), then the 4 big ones, 3/4 turn at a time, in an X pattern.

Thanks-
I got it done. I do have the manual on order. Getting that baked on paper gasket off was NO FUN!

*seems to not be leaking..* dunno yet for some miles. Only mistake I can think I might have made was marring the surface somewhere while scraping the gasket.

If you replaced the filthy-tramp paper gasket with the metal ones (Some have orange silicone, some don't), put your mind at ease and your face in the wind.

I kind-of wondered when you said the metal gasket was leaking. That's unusual. But, it's paper!

Easy enough job- just a pain to get that baked on paper off. I got a metal/rubber one from Harley, so I assumed the bottom was also that which I needed to replace. Nope. Easy enough to work on - taking the head off was only a few bolts more. I really dig this bike.

gasket remover make easy work of the paper gaskets in the future, just be carfull and use a brush to apply it, it will also make easy work of the powder coat finish on the engine.
