Let's show some respect for different points of view, especially those based on personal experience.

What exactly would you consider disrespectful about what I said?

I think the only riders that miss kickstarters are the ones that never had one.

I made this comment was based on my own personal experience. I can't think of one reason why anyone would take umbrage to this post for showing a lack of respect.

Saturday, all slimy with mud and having stalled the KLR after trying to bounce it over a 14" tree trunk, my foot slipped off the kick starter and I bashed my ankle against the foot peg, then twisted it when it hit the ground. It still hurts now.

As soon as it happened, I thought of this thread : )

On the other hand, the KLR will run not only with a bad battery, but with a bad voltage regulator as well, so me and the bike can both limp home : )

The KLR250 will run without a battery too : )
The tach will just not work right.
I tried replacing my battery with a radio shack capacitor and the lights still flickered too much.

Finally got around to taking a couple of pics of a top secret project I've been playing with:

Still got a few things to figure out though.

At this point it's all magic.
Next year it will hopefully be something more. Maybe.

Well everyone, I have all but given up on my idea/question about a kick-starter.

I love the photo. Good humor for sure, but am convinced that the actual job would be far more effort than it would be worth.

So now I am exploring ways to make bump-starts easier including both manual and electric compression releases.

Regards,

Dave

Someone has considered taking an older XL engine, like a late 60's to early 70's XLCH engine, taking a set of heads off of a tube frame Buell, and massaging that into a tube frame somehow. Seemed like a lot of work just to get a kick starter though so I, uh, they gave up on the idea for the time being.

cycle world had a kick start evo xl bolted into a norton feather bed frame. what the brits call a 'special'
the kick start set up is worth selling tickets as a carnival ride.

made me laugh, and yet I have great respect for the builder and I like that bike.
take a look

Ha that is hillarious. I got tired of kicking my old panhead over, but I do miss it sometimes.
