Author Message   Pinnacles Posted on Sunday, March 30, 2008 - 04:43 pm:        I have a 1998 S3T and the dipstick is popping out of the oil tank. I have heard this is problem does anyone have a solution to fix the problem? It made a huge mess last time I rode it. Remove the dipstick, and warm it up completely (10 minutes idle time, or so) with the dipstick out, and see where the oil level is. I'm going to guess that it's overfull. If it is, from now on, check your oil when you get back from a ride, before you shut your bike off, and you know it's right. I assumed he w/ have checked oil level first. I like to keep my oil on the low side. Seems to help w/ puking.   Buellistic Posted on Monday, March 31, 2008 - 10:47 am:        This was covered years ago, but since there is a lot of NEW BUELLers buying "TUBE FRAME" Models, here we go again ... If you put too much oil in the system it will blow the OEM oil cap out, puke out the breather, and cause the base gaskets to weep ... The proper way(factory publication are WRONG) is to check the oil with the engine running, on the side stand after a good hard ride ... Have a 102,700.8 miles on my 97S3T and have all the wrong info corrected now ... Just warm it up, turn off the engine, check the oil with the bike upright.   Jos51700 Posted on Monday, March 31, 2008 - 07:01 pm:        A bike with drainback issues will provide a false oil level if it is checked with the engine not running. There is no reason not to check a bike's oil level with the engine running and the bike upright.   Buellistic Posted on Monday, March 31, 2008 - 11:25 pm:        Let me add this: Checking the oil like "i" said, "BUT" when the dip stick first comes out of the oil tank, THAT is the oil level in the oil tank !!! If you check it again it will indicate a lower reading(drains back quickly), "SO" the first check is the level you pay attention to !!!   Bad_karma Posted on Tuesday, April 01, 2008 - 04:27 am:        Not only should you check the oil after a ride, but change it after you have run the motor to get the oil back into the tank.
