Hi everyone, first thank you for all of the information in the archives. I couldn't specifically find this problem.

3 Months ago bought an M2 with a bad VR and Stator. Mechanic went through the bike with fine toothed comb and found all kinds of small things but nothing big. Charges at 14.6V. Battery is new.

When it all went back together the rear rocker box gasket was leaking. Since I hadn't had it for 2 months I took it for a 60 min ride. I started and stopped it several times and it fired right up. Once I got home I parked it and didn't come back for a couple hours. I went to put it away and it gave about a 1/2 second of cranking and stopped. Then it wouldn't turn over. All electical connections are tight. Battery is full. Is it possible the leaking oil got into the starter? I couldn't find any mention of this in any of the Rocker Box posts.

When I get home I will strip off the seat and tail and see if something is loose deeper in there. The ignition fuse tested fine. The old school mechanic that did the VR still has my manual so I don't even have that to work through.

I bought it 3 months ago and it has ran for about 6 hours. So the wife is thinking I am crazy at this point. How can I test to see if it is the starter relay. Can you access it to Jump the terminals?

1. In neutral (light On)
2. Clutch In
3. Stand Up
4. Turn kill switch on and off as I hit the starter button.
5. Tried to "engage" starter by putting it in gear and rocking it back and forth.
6. Have not tried to push start it yet. I live in Florida and there isn't a hill around.
7. All lights/horn work. Battery is 13.4v resting.

Anyone have a way to test the relay/starter? How about connection to them coming loose. I tried to move all wires by the starter to see if something would make contact. But nothing...

First, check the sidestand safety switch. Down low, you'll see it, short it out & see if that's it.

Give the back of the starter a whack, works sometimes.

try jumping the clutch switch w/a little wire, i had two go on me so i eventually by-passed it all together.: )

thanks everyone. I think the problem was on the "OTHER" side of the ground under the seat. I tightened the battery side but it was tight. I moved the cable while pushing in the starter and it turned over. Tightened it and think I have found the problem.

Does anyone typically use Loctite on these nuts to keep them from vibrating loose?

I was worried oil got into the starter and coated contact points and wouldn't work without a good blow out. I can only expect the starter is pretty sealed off from the oil/water than can get on it.
