Ok, I low-sided my S1 back in January, as per this thread: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 330219.html?1202574619

I finally got around to cleaning her up and fixing up the damage. It looks like everything is pretty straightforward, except for a few questions:

1. The shifter shaft appears to be bent a little. I searched, but could only find threads about replacing it. After the crash I rode the bike an hour or so to get home and it seemed to shift fine (considering the bent shift lever). So, if I can reassemble it and it seems to shift ok, despite the bent shaft, should I just leave it? I read in another thread where a poster said he put a socket on it and bent it back - is this ok or could it damage something internally? Should I bite the bullet and replace it (which I'm loathe to do) even though I don't have any specialized tools (if any are required - I haven't researched it) for pulling the clutch out?

2. I am finally getting rid of my troublesome Force exhaust (since it's now pretty much ruined) and installing a Race system. I have some of the mounting hardware which I bought from Al at American Sport Bike, but I was wondering if anyone has a diagram or complete list of what I need for mounting it. I need the parts/diagram for the header/muffler connection and how the muffler connects to the underside of the bike. I know Al told me that he reinforces the 'race shoe' at the header/muffler connection since that is a common point of failure.

3. What tool or technique should I use to remove/install the header retaining rings? In another thread someone posted that a specific set of Craftsman snap ring pliers worked well. If that's the best option, I'll go pick up a set.

Thanks for any info or advice!!

If the bent shift shaft doesn't wallow out the hole in the primary and isn't leaking, I don't see any reason why you couldn't still use it. I don't think it would be too expensive to buy another one though, and it isn't that hard to replace. I wouldn't try to staighten it out still installed - you could crack the primary or ruin the oil seal.

The rear mounting system for the race kit is really simple. I have the instructions around somewhere... I could send you a copy or take a pic of it and post it if you want (no scanner).

The circlip that holds the header retainer on is easy to remove with your bare hands, no tools required. Just pull the ends apart and slide one end over the bulge in the pipe - no problem at all.

I may not be able to post a pic of the instructions until afer MB, though.

Daniel,

Thanks a bunch for the info! I'll try riding her and see if I have any leaks or problems shifting. I was leery of bending the shaft while it's still installed, so I'll take your advice and forget about that option.

If you could post the instructions (jpg or otherwise), that would be a huge help! I need to know what pieces I'm missing (if any) to have some peace of mind. What is MB? I'm trying to get it done in the next couple weeks, but if I can't it's not that big of a deal.

I'm assuming there is only one kind of circlip? The ones on my header right now are pretty stiff and sharp. I used a tool to pry the two ends over the bulge (not a bulge really on the Force - it's a step), but the middle part of the clip was still below the step. It would've required me to pry them apart a decent amount to get it over the step.

Thanks again!!
