I've noticed that older (pre-99?) S3's have rectangular tube swingarms and the newer ones have what looks to be cast triangular arms. Anyone know why and when they changed? Any noticeable stiffness improvement in the new style? Thanks.

Just a running change across the model lines at that time. The latter are better for stiffness.

if i remember correctly like 300% increase in stiffness! and it was 1999 for tubers across the board.

As I'm told the cure for the swingarm twisties is a set from a 99 or2K X1 which has been parted out. Best to get everything from the mount plate back to the axel. But don't try to get it for a melody, a good clean one will cost you,and will solve your problem beautifully.

I'd have to ask why, but I know our race team specifically did *not* switch to the later swingarms when they came out. They kept using the steel arms...but I'd have to ask to find out why. This was back when we were roadracing the S1 chassis.

The cast Aluminum swingarm, believe it or not, is heavier than the steel swingarm. Exact figures escape me. Yes, it is stiffer too, but the additional weight may have been what kept the racers from adoring it.

That steel arm must be REALLY light the Aluminum one is down right feathery

I thought the racers used a braced steel arm for better drive chain clearance.

The al swing arms were quoted as being 200% stiffer,, “the number i heard ” .. doesn’t really matter just stiffer than the former.. Early al ones were heavier than the steal.. But later ones weigh in at about the same as the steel ones. Most races use smaller diameter sprockets front and rear.. That would cause the chain to hit the al swing arm.. Braced swing arms were used by the racing teams and s2 owners,, whom cannot run the al ones with out mods or limited rear swing arm stroke. Personally I love the look of the polished al arms,, i am currently working on a braced steel one for my s2t to allow full swing arm travel with out modifying the frame but give the stiffer feel. If you are considering switching to the al arm I would suggest looking for a 2001 or up arm.. And shy away form the earlier arms,, hope some of this helps,, Aaron
