I bought the 2001 M2 - I have some questions - thanks for the help! 1. The seat is too soft! Is there a foam solution? I don't want to buy a Corbin - too much $$$ 2. What is the best quality aftermarket exhaust? I had a vance and hines before. It was too loud, and these days cops are looking. Also the v and h was tough to deal with when changing primary oil or adjusting the shoe tension. Suggestions? 3. Who sells a carbon fiber air cleaner? My old Buell Race one worked and looked great, but it leaked oil. I was hoping to avoid a catch can.. 4. Any thing I should definately check on this 2001 with 1074 miles? THanks! chuck | ||

To answer: 4. Gaskets, gaskets, gaskets, gaskets. They're gonna leak; buy 'em now, do 'em all at once. Rockerboxes, cam cover, primary chain cover, pushrod tube o-rings, intake to head, intake to carb. 1. I think there's a Buell Select seat on ebay right now for a late M2...they're awesome. It's the one with the Pegasus logo and the 'piping' trim. 2. Buell race can. The internal disc supertrapp is the same thing and sounds nice and mellow, but can be opened up for trackdays and noise. Or you can get the bigger riveted-together monster that's not tunable. I run that pipe on my S2 and lovelovelove it. Also mellow, little louder than the IDS muffler above, but a nice deep rumble (the V&H on my S1W is more of a crackle...but that's just a toy bike so I can live with the noise). 3. A properly installed race filter will not leak oil. Mine don't. Stock breather hoses down the carb throat on the S2; breather hoses to a tee fitting, down to a breather filter at the left passenger footpeg mount on the S1W. My old M2 had stock breather hoses set up in the race filter like my current S2 - into the back of the filter plate, to a tee, tee pointed into the carb. Vacuum sucked everything right in, no fuss, no muss (and NO, no fouled plugs either). Congrats on the bike - get out there and put some MILES on it!!!  | ||

Thanks - I plan on putting some miles on it - last M2 I did 46k on. Just been a few years.. It's a hell of a lot more fun than my FXD to just "ride" - not commute - but "ride"  | ||

You could get the XB rocker covers and the CF intake from Al at American Sport Bike, the covers let you reroute the breather lines through pcv valves on top and reduce or eliminate puking oil for many. I hated the stock seat on my M2, and am actually more comfortable on long rides on my [reshaped] S1 seat that all the girls here cry about  Yeah those seals and gaskets will go fast. You have two less to do if you go with the xb rocker covers too. | ||

Sounds like the way to go. I'd like a muffler that's not too much louder than stock, and is affordable as well as durable. Is that the supper trap? Man, my V&H got loud! I want to ride it without earplugs.. | ||

Also - anyone know how hard it is to find the X-1 cams and what jetting to put in the M2? It seems an easy enough job... I really dig having one of these again. My last one was so reliable other than oil leaks I really enjoyed it. | ||

x1 cams/andrews n4's-not too hard to find. check ebay. IIRC mine has 165 main / 45 slow jets I bought the 88xl needle, but found that the 165 supposedly yields better results per the "Carb jetting" thread. congrats on acquiring the M2...the best bike Buell ever made! Just ask Court. | ||

An S&S teardrop air cleaner looks neater than shit on a tuber, and there are no issues with clearance for yer leg. I'd also rather have my butt on the seat, not have the seat in my butt, like you describe.  TT | ||

I got a SuperTrapp, but won't ride it to work without earplugs. Exhaust sound is too subjective, loud for me might seem quiet for you. Not to mention the "tone". The Supertrapp at least is a little bit adjustable for sound level, but lowering sound level also lowers performance level. Wileyco has a rep for good sound but not too loud. Many describe the Race Kit exhaust the same way. Rocker lower gaskets, and the intake seals seem like the first things to go, due to age, not even miles. | ||

A 2001 with 1,074 miles. Wow! That's as good a tuber as was ever made, pretty well debugged. Changing to a #48 low speed jet and uncapping the mixture screw and setting it to 2-1/2 turns will have that running about perfect. Warms up quicker, much smoother at slow speeds, and much better transition as the throttle opens. The carb section of the KV has all the details on that. There are a lot of options on rerouting the breathers and on catch cans, again the KV has a lot of details. I have a new in the box Buell CF race kit air cleaner assembly if you are interested in it. if you want a hard seat, get a low seat. their as hard as they come without spending the money. i got the super trapp with 21 discs and open end race cap. i don't think it's that loud but considering the bike had a force on it, anything would have been quieter. | ||

I'll definitely be a player for the Cf race kit cleaner! I just got to spend some time with the bike. Brings back memories - both good and bad. It's got lots of loose plastic vibrating around. Missing both of the little bumpers up front for the steering lock, and the tank rattles - so I taped the tongue, re did some tubing which had decayed due to gasoline and age. It's neat! Needs some suspension work, bars, and maybe a pipe. Being a dirt biker, I'm kinda sensitive to suspension. That back shock is horrid, and the front needs a revalve. THese early Buells had an unfinished feel to them don't they? Oil seeping from the fill plug, clutch cable routed next to the muffler, seat not quite a good fit ... Great project bike. Previous owner didn't even mess with the suspension. No wrench marks on the preloads... |
