A recent thread gave a great link to K&N filters and it gave me the idea of plugging the holes on the snorkel of my 2000 S3 and fitting a filter on the end to mimic the Forcewinder intake and removing the breadbox. Has anyone done this with positive results? Will the plastic snorkel survive without the protective confines of the breadbox? Do you think it would look stupid? (I realize that is asking for a subjective opinion with that last question, but I've never found a shortage of opinion on this great site! lol)

The bike is pure stock right now with 10k miles and no problems.I am planning to get a race ECM this season and will gut the muffler for increased flow as I have read in other threads.

Id just spend the dough on the real thing.

Look at the diff in diameter btwn the forcewinder pipe and the snorkle. Im no engineer, but id say the snorkle might be too restrictive.

I've seen it done. It doesn't look bad if admire an industrial aesthetic. I never measured the difference in ID between a Forcewinder and the snorkel, but they must be fairly close. You'd be losing all the advantage of the airbox volume and Helmholz tuning (that's what the holes are for) for the sake of less intake resistance. You may find the end result to be a draw in terms of performance loss/gain but with more intake honk (noise).

I know a guy who made his own with PVC pipe elbows and rubber hoses. It looked like how it sounds.

If you try it, let us know how it worked out.

I'd be concerned with stress fracturing/cracking of the pipe, given the weight of the filter and vibration of the engine...

Removing the little house the filter lives in & using a conical filter on the helmholtz tube with plugs in the tuning holes is one of 2 optimum ways to boost flow in a stock Breadbox.

The other uses a home made bracket to hold a K&N replacement filter, without the little house, and either the helmholtz tube or venturi ring. ( the way I did it )

The tube doesn't look strong enough for use alone, to my eye. The fugly factor is individual taste.

I do admit to liking the look of the carbon fiber Race filter, but really, the mod'ed stock breadbox flowed more than enough for even a fairly hopped up engine.

I'd go with a modded breadbox, ( cheapest )forcewinder or clone, or Race filter. ( Either may hit knee, depending on your build & riding position )

I'd also consider an aftermarket muffler, & save the stock one for the day the pollution nazi's insist on only stock components at inspection time. Be lighter too.

I and my long legs will take the CF race filter over a breadbox any day : ) My knee touches the CF, but the breadbox makes me feel like I'm getting ready to go knee-down in a right hander...all the time.

I actually LOVE the angled CF stocker on my S2. For some reason it barely touches my knee; my S1W definitely makes itself known. Maybe it's partially the lower S2 pegs, too....

On my 2000 X1 I sawed 2 inches of the snorkel, moved the AIT sensor the same amount and plugged the 2 holes and fitted a K&N # RD-0720 3-3/4 Dia.x 7 inch long filter.
I also drilled 11- 1 inch holes in the bottom of the inside housing.
Total cost $32.00 and a couple hours of my time.
Fits inside the bread box.
Noticeable low buck performance increase.
Just my opinion but forcewinders are way over priced and over rated and damned goofy
looking hanging off the side of the bike.

I like my Forcewinder but keep going back to the stock box with the K&N stock replacement and no snorkel. I cut away the "little house" for the filter quite a bit and think it does fine.

I think Buellistic is one of the dudes running a cone filter inside his airbox on a modified snorkel. I'm surprised he has not commented yet. Seems to feel like the performance is pretty good.

Aesthetically I think it would look nasty - AAACKKKK!! What's the missus think? Your profile is interesting.

i put an early twincam SE setup on my M-2.. the early ones had a separate bracket to hold them to the engine... then i used sportster brackets to hold it to the head... it looked like it came that way and was excellent.. i put a chrome round cover on it and it was slick...it didnt hit the knee much either..

This is great insight and I appreciate you all taking the time to discuss this idea with me. I think the "PCV pipe elbows" comment conjured up a strong enough "awwk" image in my virtual retina to stop this idea from going any further for me.

The point about the muffler is a good one and one I had not considered. We don't do pollution testing on bikes in Ontario - only cars and trucks, but the weight loss is worthy consideration that had slipped my attention.

I think now, after all your welcomed comments, that I will go with a K&N filter in the bread box and open up the "little house the filter lives in" and a race ECM.

I have to set aside some track time money which my darling does not understand the need for but I refer to as being the equivalent of golf pro lessons - if I golfed (I actually hate golf - no offense to anyone here - but golf seems a terrible boring way to waste a great riding day.)
