A couple of questions if I can:
1. One of the bikes I'm interested in has very low miles. Completely stock. Does the rubber gaskets and stuff tend to rot if not ridden, or was that only the older stuff? How about the engine itself? We're talking from 1-3 k miles for an 00 or 01 bike. Is this something to avoid?
2. I put 46k on my old Buell M2. Really liked it. Sold it to someone close. I think in the time I had it I only fixed up the rocker box gaskets, and a battery. When I first got it I put on the Vance+Hines exhaust, cut two or three loops out of the slide spring in the carb, and put in a 45 pilot jet, and the race carbon fiber air cleaner. It ran fine. Everywhere.
Is this still the case? Can these parts still be found?
3. Any new or newly found things I should check right off the bat? Oil pump problems? Anything that we collectively know now can mess up?
4. Is there an exhaust pipe louder than stock but not quite as bad as the Vance and Hines? Might get in trouble these days.. any source?

THanks!
I've been riding a FXD for 5 yrs now, but miss the tossability of a M2.. hoping this little experiment will work out! I rode a new XB, and honestly, they just don't "fit." I'm going to keep this bike this time if it works out..do the maintenance kinda like an old camero..

1. An '01 with low miles should be fine.

2. You can still get headers, etc. though the Buell race kits & such are out of production & are now an e-bay item or from Buell specific companies like American Sport Bike Some things, like the new carbon fiber air cleaner, are better now.

3. The rocker gaskets/chain tensioner are the 2 things I can think of, and there is a new bronze oil pump gear. I can't think of much else.

4. I'd check the Knowledge vault. I'm still not sure how to rank the available mufflers by noise.

( DO IT! you'll love it! )

The only issue I ran into with my 1100 mile 98 S1W that I bought in 06, was it sat on the sidestand too long. Drained the fluid from the fifth gear bearing and it went dry, one season later and I had to rebuild the transmission. Rocker box gaskets leaked, but I consider that pretty close to normal maintenance, lol. +1 on the updated tensioner shoe and oil pump gear. And yes, most everything is still readily available. My '95 S2 is my daily driver and I have no worries about parts supply : )

Yeah, you might pull the "Butt plug" in the end of the Main Drive gear, and blow a load of your trans oil of choice in there, (New 'buttplugs' are cheap and easy to shove in). Other than that, blow the cobwebs out of it and ride!

I dunno why everyone talks about the oil pump gear, I've never failed one.
