I was informed by a Buell service tech that I should replace my six point front disk brake assembly (on my 99 M2) with a 10 point assembly like that which came on the 2002 models. We looked it up in the parts book and the unit costs $316. We then found an aftermarket unit that goes for $214.

Before I drop that much on upgrading the front brake assembly, I'm looking to see if there are any other options that may be 1) cheaper, or 2) better quality at the same price.

What have any of you done?

Thanks.

The Buell rotor *used* to be cheap, like $125. I don't think you'll find a new after market (EBC) rotor for less than $214, but I've had one on my M2 for 10k miles and it works well. The other pain is five bolts at $5 each to put it back on, and new pads.

I am looking to replace my entire front rotor. Is EBC the best you found for a replacment rotor? Do you remember the model number? Thanks, Mike

Your choices are OEM, EBC, Ferodo, and Wave - I just like the more traditional look of the round rotors. You can find the last three at American Sport Bike.

If the one you have is working okay, then skip it.

I am inclined to agree with Blake, if its working, why mess with it? Is there play in the carrier or something?

A Harley / Buell dealer (who is now just a Harley Dealer) bent my M2 rotor changing a tire. They graciously* replaced it for me at their cost, which even when the rotor was cheap was still close to $100. : (

I have my own tire changing stuff now...

Yes, there's the beginning of damage to the carrier.

I had purchased all of the nuts, bolts and washers necessary to swap out the disk mounting hardware. The wave washers on the bike had flattened out, and I wanted to reduce the rattle coming from the front disk.

I had noticed, recently, that the excessive movement of the disk (allowed by the flattened wave washers) has begun to wallow out an area around the washers. I'm thinking that even with new washers, its not going to be long before the issue repeats - actually, it should be faster as there's less metal for the wave washer to push against.

Given this sequence, it seems that eventually, the ends of the carrier will begin to get thin enough where it'll begin to be a safety issue - don't need the end of the carrier snapping during a high speed stop. I spoke w/ a service tech when I stopped by the dealership, and he recommended that I make the 'upgrade' as he had done on his.

Seems to make sense.

I didn't replace mine until it started chattering...and it did so quite violently. That thing was loose as a goose at that point and had a lot of fore-aft play as the carrier mounting points were well enlarged. It still stopped fine, just shook my eyeballs loose.

In short, it's not an issue safety-wise, but will become a great annoyance. I'd leave it be until it does. EBC is the best rotor for the money.

I bought ( from American Sport Bike ) the PM wheels, & am now trying to decide which brakes to use.

The lazy part of me says spend $$ & buy new, & sell the old wheels with brakes.

The frugal part says swap parts. I have no bitch with the stock M2 front brake, though I have yet to become smooth with initial brake force. The rear is just to hold you on hills, & settle the bike in transitions, I think. It's not really meant to stop you, is it?

I can't believe I got one right before the price skyrocketed. I wish my stocks could do that.

Buell82 -

The EBC part number is MD719RS. I was quoted $214.95.

I got my EBC from AppletonHD (sponsor) about a year ago. Works fine.

I love my EBC. Even with stock pads, I notice much better stopping power : )
