Hey guys Ive been reading alot of past posts and it seems the M2 was pretty dialed in from the factory, I would like more torque and power (who would'nt) but definately do not want to sacrifice low end to midrange or torque because this is what makes the M2 so great to begin with So my question is what is the cheapest way to gain any significant amount? THe bike has 17,000 miles the carbon fiber ham can, I think it was rejetted have to check and soon will have a supertrapp. From all of my reading I do not think any of these have any real benefit, maybe very slight at top end or maybe even counter productive. Is there a general consenses of the typical upgrades? Most of the cheap gains are all geared towards X1 s3 and the bikes that lacked the midrange.
Thanks

On the affordable side you have:

Race header / muffler
Race Ignition
Mikuni hsr42 carb
Andrews N4 cams/ X1 cams

While youre at it you should look into the XB rocker box setup as well.

IIRC, after that you'll need to do stuff like port/polish, headwork, 1250 kit, etc and it can get a tad spendy (it is for MY wallet)

American Sport Bike has everything you could ever need for your bike and Im sure a more savvy person will chime in pretty soon.

Good luck with your project!

Hmm everything inc. dyno charts Ive looked at showed very little results from muffler and race ignition, maybe I missed some + ones. As far as X1 cams, wouldnt I then be sacrificing midrange ( what I absolutely do not want to do. I have not read anything about doing the mikuni hsr42 carb.
Thank you
man its been a long winter cant wait to ride and get outside

Sorry. It was my understanding that the mods I spoke of improved response across the board, not sacrificing low/mid.

Someone more savvy than myself should drop in soon.

IMHO? Leave it be.... Rejet, race intake, and supertrapp are a happy and no fuss setup for the bike.

I'm thinking a 1250 kit and cams would be the way to get big mid-range. Maybe get some headwork while your at it.
That's what I'd do.

More displacement has a calming effect with uppity cams. You don't have to use X1 cams, there are other grinds out there. The 1250 kits available are pretty good deals for what you get. It's not just the displacement boost that helps, the larger bore slightly unshrouds the valves, too. Jet the stock carb right and use a can of your choice on the stock header and I bet it would be more powerful at every rpm than a stock M2. Just a few years ago, an M2 prepped like this with some gearing changes and a race kit exhaust went 150mph at Bonneville. Anyone remember that?

How much do you want to spend and what are you looking for? Tourqe or HP?

Here is what I have and the HP TQ numbers...

I am running 1203 CCs XB heads and XB12 pistons.
Stock Ignition.
45mm Flatslide Muk Carb.
Full exhaust (KT components)
Proseries style aircleaner
.536 cams.

I am getting 95 HP and 91 ftlbs TQ to the rear.

Tattood and Screwed has a simular setup but a race header and XB9 pistons and is in the 100s.

Al though with the quality of gas in some stations I personally would not run the higher compression that the 9 pistons will give you but I haven't heard TT&S have a problem yet...(nock on wood)

...you could always go this route:

[non-sponsor advert/link redacted]

...especially if your stock motor has some miles and years on it.

intake
exhaust
carb tweaks
final gearing.

After that you have to start replacing gaskets.

Thanks everyone, looks like Ill be going thru 1 more summer before getting into any major wrenching, that could be a fun project to get me through next winter. Ill have to decide on reworking 1203 or going over like the 1250. How much does a good kit cost and what type of numbers could I expect out of a smooth running not too hot setup?

I was surprised how close a M2 is to perfect.

I'm used to 80's IL4's from Japan that responded well to a pipe, filters & jetting. It's not like that for Jap IL4's either, today, everyone is closer to the edge in power.

Budget solution?
Dyno tune with the new muffler, and a good guy can maximize the potential. The black box is good for only 1-2 ponies, but changes the rev limiter function so you get linear power right up to red line. The stock box has a softer shutoff at the same RPM.

Next, 1250 kit, slightly better race headers, & as an option, a Mikuni carb. ( the stock carb is good to over 100hp, but the Mikuni is easier to rejet on the bike. )

You can run higher lift cams with much the same lift/duration as the stock cams & get more power & that fat torque curve, but to get the most at some point... ( not sure the lift ) you want better breathing. That means porting or ported XB heads.

that's from cheap to $5K plus.....

There's a cascade effect on price. At a certain cam lift the cam chests & rocker box's need to be relieved for clearance, & porting without cams or caming without ports is a waste of money, so that jump in power needs a big jump in cash.

In your situation, I'd get it tuned up nicely, & plan your assault on power & wallet.

try the as seen on tv tornado thing in the intake, and a fitch fuel catalist and drop some magnets in the fuel tank and everyone knows them should get you around 100 to the wheel

Wow thanks duece! I can see the magnets and tornado would work but whats the fitch fuel catalyst? I thought the magnets were the fuel catalyst. Hey what about some 4 prong super duper platinum plugs to boot with gold plated plug wires, Now I think were on the right track.

What you are asking for is an 88" motor with mild cams and minor head work.

X1 cams do not hurt midrange. They trounce a Sportster cammed bike everywhere...they just don't feel as smooth off the bottom. With the stock intake and exhaust it's a different story, as there is usually a big midrange dip. A free flowing intake and good exhaust system are a must.

Headwork is the best bang for the buck but is more involved.

A Mikuni 42mm carb is easy to tune and will have better throttle response, but it isn't a big power adder.

The 1250 kits don't gain huge power, there are also the benefits of better cooling and better cylinder concentricity.

Before proceeding, there needs to be a goal established for the hp/tq figures desired.

This is my power progression:
Stock
75hp, 76 ft-lbs
Slip-on muffler, jet kit, aircleaner (foam element)
76hp, 78ft-lbs
K&N airfilter, carb mods, full exhaust system
82hp, 78ft-lbs
Heads, cam, Mikuni 42, higher compression
96hp, 84ft-lbs
Headwork, Mikuni 45, 1250 kit
TBD!

My 2002 M2 recently received a Race Header and Race Muffler, a Forcewinder intake, and a Mikuni HSR 42 carb.

The results are great! No sacrifice anywhere and stronger everywhere.

The best part is the smooth power delivery.

No further changes are planned.

The M2 is really good as is. In my opinion, major changes might offer certain advantages but could run the risk of upsetting this well balanced street set up.

Good luck,

Dave

There's a difference between peak torque and the curve too. All these peak torques listed happen up around 5K rpm. That's too high for me, I want 80 ft lbs at 3000 rpm. I almost never rev over 4500 rpm, and only momentarily even then. So no cam change projected for me. I have the K&N filter on a Forcewinder style intake, right now I have a Supertrapp, thinking I could tune it for torque to some extent. Jetting. That's all the cheap stuff. Porting runs at least $550. The 1250 kit runs at least $750.
I "felt" the race ignition added just a bit from 2 to 3 grand rpm, but replaced with single-fire anyway, and but haven't dyoed any of this yet. I made two changes at once, single-fire and Supertrapp, so I don't know how to attribute the increase, but it does feel stronger now accelerating, I never felt like I had to hold on the bars before. This is still upshifting at 4500 to 5000 rpm, which is below the peak torque.

Freeflyer,

Your 2002 M2 already has Thunderstorm heads so you might just want to concentrate on jetting to get a really sweet result.

Bigger and more powerful is not necessarily "better" unless you are a racer.

I like the flexibility and user-friendly power delivery of a nearly stock M2.

Regards,

Dave

Headwork, and cams will get you some serious gains. A 1250 kit is worth another four or five HP to boot.

You can spend anywhere from $2K to $5K dependiing on what parts you use and how much of the work you do yourself.

My suggestion is to crate up your engine and have the experts--I recommend any of the performance shops sponsoring BadWeB as they are all intimately familiar with Buell engines--take care of the work for you.

If you are just looking for a little more cheap low end, I replaced the front sprocket from the 27 tooth to a new 26 tooth. Yeah it doesn't sound like much, however it made my bike run a little smoother at low speeds (less chugging around twon at 25mph) and gave me a little quicker acceleration. Besides you can do it for about $170 ($140 for the steel version)
