After searching kvault, I couldn't find an answer to my perdicament, so here it goes.

I have a 98 s3t, After removing my exhaust header to get at it, I then removed the bolts to pull off the gear case cover, and all is well.

As I begin to pull the cover, it suddenly stops, offering a lot of pressure against my pulling it.

As I look as far back into it as I can, I see what appears to be a hose with a nipple attached to the inside of the case itself.

It is not listed in the manual, and I don't know how to get at it, or what to do about it.

Secondly, there is also a metallic " Tick" sound as if I am hitting or pulling against some gear or post or something.

I am at a loss.

Firemanjim, if you can hear me, I need help.

Thanks

Did you open up the rocker boxes, and take the pressure off the pushrods?

Also, is the timing cup free?

there is a breather hose the runs from the back of the cam cover, to the oil bag, but, it shouldnt provide any tension, or a problem removing the cam cover..

Anyway, the bolts, the cams in their journals, and the TIMING stuff, are all that should prevent that thing from coming off...

The wires from the "points cover" or whatever you call the electronic version, run from there back to a plug connector beneath the starter.

The cam cover can be removed without removing the rockers but its highly NOT recommended as the cover provides half the support for the cams against open valve springs. Bad for the bushings.

Have you removed the screw that secures the ignition rotor onto the cam?
That thing is behind the ignition base plate, respectively behind the so called point cover.

+1 for above:

buy a manual
remove the upper rockerboxes and rocker arms to relieve pressure on the pushrods
remove the timing cup from the end of the cam
give a couple good taps on the bottom of the cover to help free it from the ends of the cams, and it should come right off.

I wouldn't consider going into the motor without one.
Change out the oil pump drive gear while you are in there!

Your cams are under there and are held under pressure from your lifters and pushrods. You need to take the rocker covers off and relieve the pressure. Be careful the cams do not fall out and you lose your timing.

There are marks on the cams that will help you line them up again.....

what Ralph said,

the gear case is one of the few critical assembley jobs but it is not complex
I too second replace the oil pump driving gear with a bronze one while your in there.
You need the jims gear locking tool or a reasonable subistute red locktite the clean shaft and nut on reassebley.
