Brokeneck, I tried to hit the tank with the triple tree and it clears...so I don't think I'll be needing your mad duct tape skills! Thanks anyways. <snicker>

Strange thing...I was reading up on some threads from other people who have done this conversion, thanks for the link Matt, and it was mentioned that they had to press out the steering head bolt and swap it with the one from the sporty front end. They are about 1/2" shorter in the Buell...anyway, I bolted the thing onto the bike and it fit perfect without any mods...go figure...maybe there's something different between a 2006 and a 1994??? OK, so now I'm rambling...L8r, Carl

Mine is an 01, and the XL stem was roughly 1/2" longer than the S1. I'm glad to see this wasn't an issue for you.

Brokeneck, that's the same technique that I used to dent the OTHER side of my tank on purpose. Worked pretty well, but it isn't as round as I would like.

The XL frame changed in '04, so it is entirely possible the stem height is the same now. I'm hoping I don't find huge problems when I try to put an XB front end on an S2 frame...

If you were having clearance issues between bar and tank, and could weld (I can't), the neatest trick I ever saw was years ago on a street rod. The guy needed firewall clearance for an HEI distributor so he cut an ovoid hole in the firewall...and welded in a wok.

Yep. A wok.

Quite possibly the neatest piece of improv I've seen in a garage. Although as pissed as my wife gets when I clean parts in the dishwasher, I hate to imagine what she'd do if a piece of cookware went AWOL : ) But, on an XL tank, you could probably get away with a pair of serving spoons!

I'll be expecting a full write up with tons of pics when you start this one!

It looks like a flat drag bar will hit the tank but the triple tree won't so i'm gonna need some different bars...now Mark has me thinking about drilling holes and mounting t-bars...we'll see. And I don't plan on welding on any cookware but the build is young!

Yeah i found it easier to put the tradition risers on, give more options.

Never answered what you were gonna do for forkstops. they are fairly easy http://www.turbotimelounge.us/albums/Vics-Album/aq k.jpg

As for steering stem, the sports were the same form like the early 80s through 03 I believe, and I just bolted the setup form an S3 on, no length issues.

Sorry guys....waiting on machine work. I got my new footpegs, solid rear wheel, tires coming in the mail, but once again my life is getting in the way of my garage time. I'll post some more pics ... probably thursday next week...how lame is that?

Hey guys,

Back in town and actually found some time wrench on the project. It's starting to warm up and I'm getting excited to get this thing going.

SportyMark...thanks for the link. Great idea on the fork stops...I just drilled the holes, tapped them with a 5/16" X 16 (I think!), and installed the cap screws and spacers...



Since I was in a drilling and tapping mood after the forkstops I thought I may try my hand at mounting the head light. I just took a piece of flat steel, cut it to specs, and drilled the apropriated holes. Then on the top triple clamp I drilled the handle bar mount holes on the front side all the way through the piece. Then I tapped the holes all the way through so I could bolt the flat steel peice to the bottom of the triple clamp. Then just bolt the headlight mount to the flat steel mount and...



The machine work is complete on the top triple clamp and now I can mount the bars...so whatchoo like?

Short?


Regular?

I've also got the rearsets done...

I've got an M2 front fender and like the shape of it but I'm not sure how to mount it without it looking like a Frankenstien after thought...
