Just bought a new m2. The old one the guy told me he used castrol syn 10w40 so I kept that going.

I have no clue what he was using on the new one. What recommendations do you have?

I'm not too creative so I always used castrol 20-50 non-synth.
Cheap and effective.

I use Torco semi-syn 20W50, but I think that the 20W50 is more important than the brand or type, assuming you change it regularly.

I've always run 20w50, either dino or Syn3. I run it year round here in Maryland - 90 degrees or more in summer, and I'm too dumb to stop riding when it drops below freezing (as long as the roads are dry). No issues.

You can find a lot on this subject in the KV section. I run 15/50 Mobile 1 and recommend it.

I run Mobil V-Twin Syn. Any quality syn is fine, though I advise 20W50 no matter what u choose. Important part is to keep it clean.

Have never found the Mobil 1 V-Twin..

But, I use, 20-50 Mobil 1...

Thats the rear cylinder after 50K=, ridden HARD... was run lean a couple times, maintained 5k rpm plus for 70 miles(5th gear obviously)..

The scoring is nothing, and cleaned up with a good hone...

Both cylinders where cut .010 and used to convert an 883 to 1200(1214 IIRC)..

Convincing enough argument..

Even the bottom of the piston was pretty clean..

Rod side tolerances were well within spec..

Do you guys run M1 in the primary too? I thought I'd heard M1 and stators didn't get along...

I know, the thread is about engine oil... ;)

I HAVE put M1 in the primary, when I was having crank seal issues...hehehe

But, I use Sport trans in the primary and trans..

I'm about to do my first primary oil change. I was planning on using the Mobil 1, but I keep seeing this recurring Stator damage deal. Is this just an Urban Myth or what? Every time someones say "They hear it causes stator problems.", 2 or 3 other people respond saying they have used it for years without issue. Has anyone actually had first hand experience with stator problems due to using Mobil 1 in the primary? If so, what would make it any different to the stator than any other Synth oil?

I say why take a chance? I run only Sport-Trans in the primary. If you look at your owners manual you will see that Buell insists on it, though they don't insist on anything specific for the engine. If it ain't broke....

go to the harley and v-rod forum... there are a zillion post on the subject...probably more urban myths on motorcycle oil than any other subject...
thundergeek harley threatened to void my warranty if i put synthetic oil in my bike...now that harley sells it, its the nuts...you can go five thou between changes too... i had some mobil one with almost five thou on it tested on my v-rod...the report said that is was still good to go...
i ran it im my police car back in the early seventies...it was good then and its good now..
you can go with one of these other brands of synthetics, but when you are a thousand miles from home, where do you find a quart if you need one?

Just for clarification. It is the Mobil 1 Gear oil that may be a problem, not the 20W-50 V-Twin engine oil when used in the primary?
Thanks,

Welcome Gary!

I am happy to hear you like your Buell. If you can use any assistance, I am not far away. (Mobil 1 GEARLUBE will definitely eat your stator - but as others stated M1 15-50 or 20-50 work very well in both engine AND primary, as well as any other high quality fully synthetic oil)

Make sure you leave the week of the 4th of July open - you will kick yourself if you don't go to Homecoming!

I run 15/50 Mobile 1 and recommend it.

I run the 15w50 Mobil also, almost exclusively (always with a factory filter, btw). I like being able to buy the stuff anywhere... even at grocery stores in a pinch.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. Another "Newbie" fear bites the dust. Stay tuned for more first time dumb questions!
Oz666, if you ask my wife, I don't just like my Buell, I'm obsessed with it.
