How do I identify XB12 heads? They still have the breather holes (although I assume non-functional) so you can mount the AC bracket, right? So, is it just the pear shaped chamber that you can use to identify them as XBs?

The coil bracket located the intake on the 07 and earlier XB's. I'm not sure about '08.

If they're black, and there's a head temp sensor hole on the left side of the rear head, then they're X1/S3.
They may be XL1200 also. Any part numbaz on 'em?

They are black. They have the breather holes. If XBs have no holes then how do you mount an X1 air cleaner bracket to the head? Are'nt there holes for the front motor mount?

From what I have been reading in this section it sounds like you can bolts up XB heads and Cylinders to an X1. Am I missing something?

No part numbers and not year. Can't see motor mount holes in the front head but can clearly see breather holes.

I think these maybe XLs and are being passed off as XBs.

Is this an XB Head

I think these are the casting numbers:
f-16826-00
r-16835-00

Are these XB?

If they have holes for an air cleaner they are not XB heads, cooling fins are much larger on the XB heads as well ...

Those look like thunderstorm heads IMO..

To answer your question about XB heads and mounting the carb bracket, you need to drill and tap XB heads to mount it.

You could get current 1203 Sportster heads. They have identical ports, valves, combustion chambers, fins, and the tapped breather holes for carb/injection hold downs.

It would lessen the expense/time of drilling and tapping if you did this.

Wouldn't I still have to have the front of them tapped for the motor mount?

I'm pretty sure those are X1/S3 heads. If you can take a pic of the left side of the rear head, I can say for sure.

The Bathtub combustion chamber gives them away as Buell heads. The XL's are more open.

"No, it has those too."

I don't feel so good about posting this. I always assumed they did, but now when I think about it, I'm not so sure.

Could someone confirm this for Bobo before I get a reputation for 'bad gouge'?

You are right. The XL heads have the motor mount holes. Wasn't thinking, I have an 06 XL. I assume the location would be the same as for the X1.

yes your correct, they have the mounting holes, but............. the location is slightly different which is why you either need to buy a new mount or slot your current one...

I wouldn't slot those holes. There are enough problems with the stock front mount. Slotting the holes could only make the problem worse it would seem.

The XL1200R heads are a RETRO-FIT(no need for a motor mount to make the XB front head to fit and no need to drill for breather carb. throttle mount) and then you use the XB12 or XB9 pistons ...

What you get from this is a lighter valve train(must be careful of chose of cams), better OEM flowing head over OEM THUNDERSTORM heads, and the chose of a higher compression with XB9 pistons ...

How about it Phat_j is that not correct ...
