Dave The 97 is still running the lightning motor. In 98 they went to the thunderbolt motor with better heads, 2.5" collector on the header and different cams. You give up a little power below 1500 for more power in the middle and up top. Joe |

The 97 would be easily upgradable, though. I upgraded my 95 S2 - same basic motor as the 97 S3 - with thunderstorm heads/pistons, lightning component (X1) cams and a race ignition and it's a night and day difference. Still not the lighter flywheel of my S1W, but the S2 is my "cruiser" so I'm not so worried about psycho-power |

The 97 S3 motor was the same as the S1 motor (cams included). The 98 S3 motor was the same as the S1W motor. The difference was the T-storm heads (with matching pistons)and the header collector. The cams in the S1 and S1W are the same. |

Have a 97 S3T !!! Going to UP-DATE the OIL PUMP to a -07(it now has a -98/-91A) and a -06 OIL PUMP GEAR ... When and if "i" get UP-DATE the TOP-END(has 101,937.9 miles as of the last ride) which has never been off, it will get the following ... This UP-DATE should work using "STOCK" OEM Parts of the following: XL1200R Heads, XB9 Pistons, and cylinders having the COOLING FINS to match the Heads ... In BUELLing LaFayette |
