I am getting my bike ready for spring riding and picked up some plugs for it and I was going to change the oil too. I have no manual and want to make sure I maintain it correctly. Questions What do you gap the plugs to? What air pressure do you run in your tires? How much oil does it hold and what viscosity? I think 10w-50 synthetic? Also, is the tranny oil separate from the crankcase oil? thanks in advance |

The buell manual for my 98 S1 says-spark plugs-(0.038-0.043in.)(0.97-1.09mm).The tires should say on the side wall.Oil,The tank holds 2 qts.But I fill it half way up then let it warm up then check it again and fill it to the level on dip stick.Other wise when it pushes the oil up that has drained to the eng after sitting, it will over flow if you fill the tank cold.Harley filled mine up several times and by the time I got home it was all over the bikes ass end.I have never had good luck at HD.above 40-20w50,above 60-SAE50,above 80-SAE60.eng and trans the same.Ive always used syntec full synthetic.I have 62000 miles on mine and doing good. The trans hold 1 qt that you fill on the left side of trans. And live in fl.HOT |

I run 36 in the front tire, 36/38 in the rear. Depends on your riding style and comfort preference. I run HD Syn3 synthetic in the engine, and in the primary/trans. There's only one viscosity of Syn3 and I run it all year round (in Maryland - hi 90s summertime to 10s/20s in the winter - I'm too dumb to stop riding in the cold, LOL). Engine oil drain is the black plug under the left passenger footpeg, end of a rubber hose that's clipped to the peg support part of the frame. Primary/trans drain is on the bottom of the left side of the bike, above the muffler, towards the rear. The one in the center (front/back center) is the primary adjust, it's a large nut with a hex-socket bolt thru the middle. Not the drain. The drain is further back, towards the centerline of the bike. To refill the primary, take off the 4 bolt clutch cover on the left side and fill to just below the opening with the bike sitting straight up. Should be right around one quart. If you have a dealer nearby, order a manual for yourself. You can still get owners manuals and shop manuals new from Buell, and they make life MUCH easier. If you don't have a local dealer, let me know and I can order the books for you at work and ship 'em. |
