This is a 2000 X1. Attached a pic of the stand. Seems too far forward. Any ideas what is wrong?

It appears to be bent forward at the pivot. Does it look right when up?

I don't believe I'd trust it very long like that.

Thought so. Are there after market kickstands or do I just need to order an OEM replacement?

It appears the sidestand may be slightly bent, but it also looks like the bracket (which also controls the forward travel) may be wallowed out (I've seen that once before). I'd bet if you put the stand up, you'll see where the normally squarish bracket has a rounded dent in the front where the kick stand was worn (and there will probably be wear on the stand, too.)

Due to the length of the stand, a little bit of wear hear becomes a lot of distance at the end of the stand.

Does that mean it is more than just the stand that has to be replaced but the bracket as well?

IF that's the case, the bracket needs to be repaired, but it's not easily replaced, as it's part of the frame.

A skilled welder can lay metal in there to restore the contact point and bring the stand back down a little.

If that's what it needs, don't go nuts. Add in a little metal at a time because too much will keep the stand from going over-center as far, and bike fall down, go boom.

Once the metal is in there, it's a little bit of a pain to grind it back out. It's a measure twice, weld once kinda thing.

I don't think it is the bracket which appears to be part of the frame. Here is a shot of the kickstand. Definitely bent. Not a good sign of what could be wrong with the bike that I don't know about.

Well, that is why I bought it - cheap and a project.

Someone must have really reefed on that sidestand. I weigh in the +230 range and sit on my M2 all the time with no bending.
They must have done the "piviot the bike on the sidestand" trick a few times to get it to bend that bad.
Fortunately for you the fix is quick and realitivly inexpensive.

Just look for one on eBay. Or perhaps someone here has an extra. Cheap and easy to fix.

Just watch out for that spring when you you go to put it back on. They have been known to bite both paint and fingers.

That divot in the sidestand is the result of someone bringing it down "with authority", on a regular basis. The hammering of bringing it down hard'n fast has caused the divot, and I could definitely see someone doing the twist'n'turn on it to bend it.

Wow. It's a sidestand. Someone thought it was a kickstarter.

. . .or perhaps transported the bike with the kickstand in the "down" position. Don't ask me how I know this . .

Don-
That's why we're such a knowledgeable bunch. We've all done something like that a time or two. Didn't someone say "Experience is the best instructor".

"Experience is the best instructor"

You know it!
I'll never bust anyone's chops for the first mistake, it's learning from those mistakes that I look at.

Edison had a good quote for this...
