Thinking about selling my 98 S1W so I can get a new XB12R. I cant afford both. How much could I expect to get for it? Pretty well stock.

They seem to go for between $1,800-$4,000. Wish they went for more. If you have the stock air box and a stock inner fender with the license plate holder and a stock gas tank with lettering intact you might get a little more to someone wanting a collector. Sad to say but these are often worth more in parts than whole unless you find the right buyer, and even then you have to sell the engine for a fair price.

Figure how much you "need" for it, post it up here and on your local Craigslist and see what happens. You might be better off using it as a trade-in if your local dealer likes to keep a tube frame Buell on the floor.

miles are important to some folks. not me, I can see asking 4k and working from there. dont be disappointed when you get low ball offers though. it is after all a 98.

Here was my recent advice to another S1 seller in the Classifieds:

My $0.02 is that most tubers sell for around $4000 almost regardless of modifications, unless it's nearly show bike quality. I picked up my used S1 for under $4000, and it had about $4000+ of engine work done to it. So, even though you have a lot of nice mods you might be pricing it a little high. Plus, your bike is very unique (I really like it), so it may not appeal to everyone.

Also, I just sold my other S1 and I got a LOT more responses from listing it on craigslist than Badweb. I think it's probably because people are so spread out here. So, I would recommend putting it on craigslist before ebay. This was the first time I've sold via craigslist, and FYI you have to relist it every 7 days because it disappears after that time.

The other problem is that selling something so specific for a fair price usually takes a while because the right buyer has to come along. I was asking a very reasonable price for my S1 (under $4000) and it took around 3 months to sell. So, if you have the time you can get your price, but if you need the money now you will probably have to accept less than you like. If your previous post is serious and keeping it is an option, then just keep listing on craigslist and here until the right buyer comes along.

Anyway, my advice is worth what you paid for it, but I bought my current S1 a few months ago and sold my other S1 this week. Good luck, and I really like your bike!

I paid 2K for mine a couple of months ago. It was, and still is, in sad shape. The original owner had taken care of it and did a few modifications but the second owner really trashed it. He kept telling me how rare it was. I offered him 2k and he took it.

BTW: I sold my 97 S1 to get my XB and I missed the tuber so much I bought two of them.

I think the price every has told you (around 4K) is about right. It is really too bad. I sold my GFs 96 POS Sporty for 4,500 and had people lining up to buy it and it was in real bad shape....

start at 4k and go from there, i bought my cyclone in the middle of summer for 2300. It was in ok shape, but the previous owner did some things that still make me scracth my head. I bought it over craigslist and as someone else stated, thats where i would start, and then put it on ebay.

edit: YOU WILL MISS THE TUBER!

I came across a06 XB12r that had been laid down, no visible damage and it drove perfect, but I traded it for another X1, don't like the newer ones. It felt too smooth and detached, and it sounded like a VW. The riding position was to aggressive, not comfortable. Even at 3k with a salvage title, it wasn't worth it, keep the pretty tuber.

I agree w/ the consensus. 4K sounds about right. You'll never get what it's really worth. Why w/ you want to downgrade to an XB12R?

a year and a half ago we got my buddy an 02m2 with 2600 miles on it for 3500, stock. right now there's another one out in colorado for 3500. when i got my replacement, i wanted it so bad i paid over 5k for it. if you can hold out, you will get what you want when that perfect someone comes along. if not, be prepared to take a small beating. good luck none the less and it is a shame that you can't afford both cause you will miss it later. the xbs was nice but it is by no means my m2.

I think any bike sells for more in the Great White North than in the 49 congruent states. Could it be worth your while checking our local prices? Maybe you can plug into our market and arrange to give a Canuk brother a deal by our standards and still make a little more than you would expect down there...
here is a major Ontario listing of used vehicles including bikes ... see what you think

just a thought for you eh!
