Sometimes confusion seems to linger at my house;sometimes it just moves in and plays "Wipe Out" continuously on my head.
I went and picked up those other forks this evening.
They are the same number as the ones I already had. So, I went out to my old M2, and low and behold they are also RJ0120L(L&R) then I was really bewildered. THEN I reread your post Dwardo, and realized the number you listed was from yours and not the pic's I posted. I had thought the ones I had were lows, but now I see they are standards!!(I guess anyway)
I also looked at the shock for the L frame I have, and went out and looked at the one on my standard. I didn't see any numbers on the shocks, but I forgot to look really close when I carried it back inside.Looks the samealike to me. Of course one has a bike sitting on it, so it's not extended,(again I guess), as much as the L one. It's dark and grungy out there and stuff piled all around, so the pic's I took are not so great, and I couldn't see an easy way to measure the mount under the present conditions. I'm waiting for my parts book to show up, but I don't know if it will help me or not.
I can send you a set of these forks whenever you are ready, I paid $100 for the ones I just got. Don't want to talk about what I paid for the others(no patience). I can just send them to you(send me an address), and wait until we know what we are doing. If we swap, you can send me yours later. Depending on your schedule I'll put mine together standard, or wait until you're ready and we'll swap stuff. If we end up not swapping, you can pay me back for these.
So here's what I got, see if you can figure anything out.

Those sure look alike to me. I would rather send you the $100 in exchange for the forks and if I do the modification you can send it back when you get my forks. That way you're covered in case of my typical packed schedule/procrastination problems. I can see me rebuilding the forks in the fairly short term but I can also see me getting close to the riding season and saying to myself, "Don't f**k with a running piece". That's why I was wondering about your time frame. Does that sound OK to you? BTW, if the parts manual you get is the same one I downloaded there aren't any illustrations. What I think I actually have is a price list but it does list the part numbers and descriptions.

Okay, I bought the book, looked at the pictures, even read the numbers.
How is it that the more educated I get, the dumber I feel?
The 02 book says:
J0121.01A4--Low front fork asm, left
46032-99Y---front fork asm, left

J0122.01A---low front fork asm,right
46033-99Y---front fork asm right

none of which matches the numbers on the assemblies on my standard M2, or the replacement forks I bought from another M2.(RJ0120L)

Don't know if this helps but I have an '01 Low, My front fork numbers match what your book says. I have the RJ 0121.01A4 and LJ 0122.01A4. Forks have never been replaced.

For what its worth, the numbers on your fork sticker are not valid part numbers in H-Dnet. Perhaps they're manufacturer numbers?

The numbers from your book all come up as valid, no supersessions to or from them either, so they are what they are and they always have been. Odd.

The closest part numbers in my price list are J0120ML and J0120MR, which are listed as "Fork Slider and Tube Assembly". WTF?

"Those sure look alike to me."

The shocks that Rotzaruck posted pics of are clearly different lengths. The one being held up is longer than the one installed on the bike.

Am I the only one that can see this?

Thanks, surely this is not as confusing as it seems like it is; but it seems like it is.
BlackM2, did you find those numbers on the forks somewhere? With Ratbuell's checking, at least I know they aren't necessarily wrong, but those are the only numbers I see. They match the one on my wrecked standard, so I am assuming they are standards, unless mine have been changed before for some reason.

DJ
The outside cylinder part of the shocks look the same length. The pic's look like the one off the bike is longer, but it's not. Well, if it is, it's very hard to tell just looking. I don't know how they change as far as extension of the piston part off the bike. I'm anxious to get time to move the bike somewhere warmer and pull it off and see. I can get a better pic too, from a more neutral perspective.
This has got me to wondering how many bikes are running around with mixed up parts.
Maybe if I get some standard forks to Dwardo, he can verify a difference, then we'll be okay, numbers or not. I guess.
If I can tell a difference in the shock, that will settle that part. At least sorting out the side stands shouldn't be too complicated.

"The outside cylinder part of the shocks look the same length."

It's the eye-to-eye length that's important. The shock being held up to the one on the bike looks like it has a longer eye-to-eye length; it's front part is sticking out farther. The most obvious visual clue is the relative locations of the reservoir fittings on the shock bodies; they are different distances from the spring cannister.

Finally managed to get the old cripple to the hospital. I was thinking that taking the motorcycle off of that shock would change the length of the shock, but I couldn't tell if it did. There is a definite difference. It's almost nearly an approximate 1/2" difference. It's actually a bit less than that, but then we'd have to get in to those little bitty marks, and I've never seen much use in those. I still could not see any kind of identifying numbers on either shock.
The low shock is closest to my toes.

I was going to pull the mount off, but after the shock comparison, and holding the low mount up beside the standard with no noticeable difference, I succumbed to a serious bout of laziness and left it alone.

There is always someone who has a standard M2, but really wants an M2Low. Find someone who wants a Low and make some arrangements to trade the pieces that make a Low a Low. I bet you could make it happen right here on the board.

I already made such a deal with Rotzaruck and he has come thru magnificently. My hangup is that I know that my shock works well and doesn't leak so I don't know that I want to trade for a shock of unknown condition since I understand they can't easily be rebuilt. Forks I can do. I'd like to get an aftermarket shock but I'm hemmorhaging money right now due to home improvement, treating a dog with Lyme disease and tires for my car. I can't justify spending the bux on a new shock.

I think the eye to eye on the spring is 16.5.
It should work no?

There's 2 lengths of shocks AFAIK - 16.5 and 14". I'm pretty sure it's an either / or situation - you either have one length, or you have the other. I just put a new Works on my S2; it had a recall shock on it. 16.5" measurement, fit perfectly, works (no pun intended) great.

I thought - would have to look in EPC to verify - the difference between an M2 and M2L was not the shock, but the shock mount or swingarm itself.

And remember - when you have weight on a tuber shock, it gets longer...not shorter.
