I was in the process of inspecting my oil pump drive gear on my '99 X1. I drained the oil tank and only got probably a cup, but when I loosened the oil pump, just under a quart spilled out the moment it popped loose. The bike has been sitting for a couple months.

Is this normal?

I'd expect something like that with a cold engine, but only a cup from the tank?

That would be typical.
Part of the reason you need to run the bike before checking the oil, is because oil will drain out of the tank and back into the engine after it sits for awhile.
I think there's a check valve that is supposed to keep it from draining, but at times it fails.
Not a big deal, as soon as you start the bike up it all pumps back up through the system properly...

Somewhat the nature of the beast. They are, after all, refined versions (very refined) of the old iron head Sportsters, which were (are) notorious for that. I drain mine for the winter, and put NO OIL stickies all over it. Might help save my crank seal.
