With all of the buell tube frame models going under the knife to make chopper kits does any one want to speculate if our bike will be worth some good money down the line i personally know of four tubers that have met this fate in my small town alone, what do you think?

I highly doubt it. Just because something is rare doesn't necessarily make it valuable. It has to be desirable as well, and I think the tubers are very unappreciated. Just like the discussion on the Quick Board, the general public wants either a chromed out cruiser or a plastic clad rice rocket. I'm amazed that they sell so cheaply right now, but then again I haven't found anything newer that strikes my fancy.

I can`t stand those Mutant kits. I see them in parking lots, NEVER on the road.

Not sure how they compared new but my 99S3 compares well to my 04XB12R in resale right now. I still think the S3 is one of the best looking bikes ever!

I actually like the mutant kits but only the xb's. Would never cut one up though. Just buy new parts from harley that way ya know what ya got and save a work of art.

Mutants are abortions. Choppers in general are a joke as are ape hangers, 4ft sissy bars, fringe, skulls etc. Whenever I see a chopper I always shake my head, at the bike and the loser riding it. The tube frames are some of the nicest bikes ever built IMO. To ruin one just to get attention is criminal. I could care less about the XB's, mangle it if you want as they are nothing special anyway.

Tube frame Buells are undervalued - for now.

I see my two tube frame Buells as being like two wheel Panteras. That is, a large displacement American (V8/Vtwin)motor in a lightweight frame with excellent handling and brakes.

Like our Buells, Panteras were also undervalued when produced and just a few years later they could be had cheaply. Now a good example of a Pantera can bring $30,000.

I feel like I have found the ultimate bargain in my Buells. I spent less on the two of them than I would have had to spend on just about any one new motorcycle. Buells have a strong aftermarket and will have good parts availability for years.

Although I expect the price for nice tube framed Buells to go up significantly in the coming years, that is not important to me because I have no intent to sell either one.

Regarding the kit bike craze, look at the bright side. These "builders" are putting lots of nice parts on e-bay and they are not expensive to buy - at least for now.

I hope my financial situation allows me to hang on to my 2002 X1W until it is worth more. There is one in the KC paper this morning for sale for $4500.00
I paid $8000 for mine, and have done a few things to it. It runs good and although it has some dinks, I have laid it down once, it fell over in the front yard once, my grandson scratched it with one of his toys, I had the front engine mount break when I hit a pothole and the broken piece scarred up the rocker cover and I had to rebuild the exhaust hanger system on it.
I was once told that Buell built 742 X1W but another X1W owner told me it was more like 500 units. Can't get a straight answer from my inquiries with the factory.

I figure the Willie G's Bastard Stepchildren patch on the tank bag makes it worth even more.

If the 1125R brings in numerous new riders and attention then the older, classic Buells may start to become more valuable, especially the rarer models.
I'm astonished that you still see pre-production Buells selling for so cheap.
There's an RS1200 in the classifieds here for what $6500?

Not_purple, I'm not so sure about that. I think the 1125R will cause many mainstream sportbike riders to buy a Buell, but they won't appreciate the classics any more than they do now. I think it is somewhat similar to the XB series. The XB's have increased Buell's popularity by orders of magnitude and I expect the 1125R to do the same. But, XB riders don't necessarily appreciate tubers, even though many of them like the street fighter genre.

It would be great if the value went up (even though I plan to keep my S1 a loooooong time), but I just don't see it happening.

Sportbike people generally have no real sense of nostalgia.

OLD sportbike people do feel nostalgic.
I think our tube-frame bikes will become more valuable when we are all too old to ride them.

Doesn't really matter to me since I have no intention of selling mine.
Not worth anything now anyways with all of those miles on it.

I have gone through a few street bikes in my early years as a motorcyclist. I am 100% proud to say i love my x1 with the passion of 1000 suns and will never sell it just cause it isnt worth cash money. i have a red stripe so maybe in 2048 it will be worth 200 bucks more than a regular one! but hey, just look at the real ss and original gto's from the day----major bucks!

Back in the late 70's a norton commando, a nice BSA or old Ducati could be had for next to nothing. The prices on those have really come up in the last several years. I think the tubers might come around some day. Look at what an old late 40's harley could be had for 20 yrs ago compared to now.

Resale value doesn't mean anything if you don't sell your bike!

"... the passion of 1000 suns..."

That doesn't even mean anything... but I understand it completely...

For me I like the poor resale value. I never buy any motor vehicle new. I love my S3 and hope to love other low resale Buells in the near future, maybe an XB or an RS for the 6500, thats a steal. I don't care what I can sell them for because I don't plan on selling any Buell I own. I would rather start a Buell farm where all unappreciated Buells could hang out in my barn. I know it sucks for those who don't like them but I DO. Wow I never thought I would say those words. Dont tell my GF.

Amen.

I might sell my '79 sportster one day but I can't see myself without the old Xwing.

After this summer, it has more miles on it than the Ironhead anyways.
I do plan on getting a XB12X within the next year but the X1 will always live with me.

Rde48's post makes a good point. Low resale value actually helps those who like them (those that want to buy), and hurts those that don't (those who want to sell). So, maybe we should be happy about low resale values since that will allow us to buy more Buells!

Well, 4 months ago, I had never even seen a Buell, let alone a tuber. I had heard of em but....the one I bought was the first one.

The whole experience before buying my 2002 M2 was like....meh.....I wanted some pavement wrinkling cruiser(Vrod was my first choice) but I had heard of this used cherry cyclone in Smithers(nearby town) and figured it was worth a look. When I first seen the bike and heard it run, I was mildly interested. The owner let me take it for a burn. I went around the block, never going over 4000 rpm. Pulled into his driveway and bought it, no dickering or nothing. At that point, I didn't want to insult the bike as I was in love. I paid $7000 and I still feel like I stole it from him.

I consider myself kinda mainstream and I would have paid 10,000 knowing what I know now. So if there are more like me out there, tubers may rise in price....but barring a major financial catastrophe, I will never sell this bike as long as I live.

I traveled to several countries on various deployments

A buell tuber would likely sell for way more than 10K in some of them.

I talked to someone in IIRC Jebelali that paid like 25K for a stock and used sportster.

The price for a tuber in Germany depends on the model.
The most wanted is the S1,especially the S1W.
Cyclones are relative cheap,so are X1.
As for the S2 and S3,they are very rare but not really regarded.
Today definitely no one would pay 10k Euros for a stock tuber.Maybe in 2027 they will, when there will be only self-acting plasma engines around: ) and tubers can only be adored in a museum.

Dave 02,

great analogy, using Pantera -

correct you are, Sir !!

RE: $30k current price - since that's pretty much where they've been priced
for 25 years, what with inflation & all,
they're a better deal now than ever.....

------------------------------------------

I believe that used tubers, especially M2s & S3s,
are among the very best values on the used market

Kevin Smith & other S2 owners will likely prove the Buell owners
whose mounts hit the highest values in 20xx
