I finally got everything in and together and I need to figure out what is a good price for an engine build. I need the following installed: 1250cc big bore kit New oil pump Complete gasket and seals kit XL1200 Heads XB Rocker Covers The motor is out of the bike and I am going to bring it to a few places for quotes, but I am looking for a good ballpark range that I should pay. I dont want to insult someone by asking them to do it for next to nothing, but then again I do not want to get raped with an outrageous price. What do you think a good price is to get this all done? Dave,if you have the engine out you have done most of the work already. Putting on a top end is minor stuff and would save you a ton of money. Ball park--1250 kit--800 oil pump 150.00 you just need upper end kit and big bore kit should come with base gaskets---60.00 XB covers with breathers--120.00 no clue on heads. | ||

If your competent enough to pull the engine, then your competent enough to install those parts. You could pay a shop to just set the ring gaps and install the pistons in the jugs (NHRS and other shops which sell the overbore kits will do this for like 40 bucks each). After that it would be just bolt and the only special tool required would be a torque wrench. I can rebuild the top end of an engine with many more cylinders in a day or less, but I would guess they would charge you something like 4-6 hrs for installation of everything you mention above. Depending on the local going rate that could be anything from 250-500. (Message edited by whosbeenfartin on October 22, 2007) | ||

ok, so anywhere from 500-1000 for everything would be a good place to start? What about adding a port and polish to the heads and a nice little shave also? I was talking to a few people about this. (Message edited by dtmcnamara on October 22, 2007) | ||

That would probably just cover the labor. Parts somewhere around 2000.00. | ||

Just a bit of a question. During rebuild can the new style XB crank/flywheel assembly be substituted for the original? Seems like it would be a good upgrade. | ||

Disclaimer : I dont know. I speculate, not with out machining the cases, and there may be oil pump drive issues as the pump is not driven in the same manner as before. | ||

Make sure that the engine gets a DRIVE GEAR,oil pump PN 26391-06 !!! | ||

i have hear MANY good things about the zipper, but then there were also the TERRIBLE tragedies of them not being as reliable as they use to be.....IDK | ||

If you are going to buy a new oil pump(aftermarket), get the one that sucks the oil of the rocker arm area ... | ||

There's a four stage pump available that has an additional scavenge circuit. I just let gravity take care of it with external lines. |
