Reading the owners manual (95 S2), it lists "fuel capacity - 4.4 gal" and the line below says "reserve - 0.6 gal". Is that a total capacity of 5.0 gallons, or is it a total capacity of 4.4 gallons with a "usable" capacity of 3.8 (4.4 minus 0.6)? I haven't been able to put more than 3.6 in it yet after hitting reserve and finding a station at the next exit. I've been tempted to try carrying a bottle of gas in the saddlebag for a TRUE 'reserve' and experimenting a bit...but thought I'd ask here first. | ||

It is real close to 5 gallons, tested it to the maxin Death Valley going to meet Ferris and Co one time.Went onto res way before I had planned and coasted into the gas station for the meet on less than fumes.Took like 4.8 gallons. | ||

I know I've gone 244 miles with it on reserve and the engine was still running but it was also interstate... And if you fill it to the top it is close to 5 gallons... | ||

Material thickness varies, do the bottle test if you really want to know. Or you can take the tank off, or leave it on, and drain a "full" tank into a container and measure it. I put "full" in quotes because how close one gets to the rubber funnel when filling their bike varies quite a bit. But with all that said I've put close to 5 gallons in the S2 before. | ||

That all makes me feel a bit better. I hadn't been able to put more than 3.6 in it before; recently I had the tank off to do some other work to the bike so I pulled the petcock and shortened the standpipe about an inch. First fillup netted me 4.3, I wasn't sure if I was a couple ounces away from pushing the bike, or if there was still a bit of fuel in there. The old way, I knew I had a *ton* of range on reserve; just trying to find my limits now is all. Anyone know if a Gatorade bottle will hold fuel, or will it melt? Might try carrying one in the saddlebag one day for the Kosmo Kramer "beyond empty" adventure, LOL. | ||

Go to local camping store and get a nice alum bottle for storing camp stove fuel,cheap and works great--oh and SAFER!!!!! | ||

 Most outdoor stores and many discount chain stores carry something similar to the above picture. Like FMJ said, much safer. Just label it as "auto gas" so someone doesn't think it's for the camp stove or kerosene. |
