I found that my intake gaskets were bad on the S2. I have had the intake on/off three times now, and can't get the @&$%@!! intake gaskets to seal. Each time I get her together and bring it up to 2K, spray some carb cleaner on the intake and it dies! So I pull it back apart, recheck, clean, and install... Only to have it leak again...

Any suggestions? I'm running out of ideas... and Biketoberfest is coming quickly!

That must be one heck of a leak to kill a motor turning 2K.
I don't know what your skill level is, so don't take offence.
Look for any left over residue in the intake or outside the manifold. When you place the manifold, besure to center it between the two cylinders.Make sure it stays centered when tightening it down.
Do you know which seal is leaking? Sometimes the one for the carb. will pop up or in and you can't see it.
Are you puting anything on the seals when you install them? Sometimes I put a real light coat of vasoline on the seals to keep them from hanging up....Hope this helps......Charlie

Also, make sure you don't have an open vacuum port (carb. or intake)..Charlie

You could have a cracked hose to the vacuum switch?

And when you tighten down the bolts holding the manifold, make sure the manifold is centered and turn each bolt down a tad move on to the next and so on, so that the manifold snugs down evenly everywhere.

+1 on Henrik. Tighten in sequence, with a little wiggle on the intake after each bolt to make sure the seal is tight against the gasket. Make sure the intake flanges are evenly spaced from the head from bolt to bolt, i.e. not against the head at one bolt and waaay out there on the other. And put a schmear of grease / WD40 / engine oil around the carb throat before you slide it into the carb seal (which should be installed on the intake first, then carb inserted) just to make sure it doesn't grab or pinch.

One other thing - the S2 comes with the open air filter stock. I've found that if you spray against an open filter, you can get a false leak reading because the carb cleaner gets sucked thru the filter easily.

Thanks Guys!

Charlie, your point about using vasoline to help it seal did the trick! I had been considering using "something" to help it seal, but wasn't sure if I should or not.

Also, Henrik and RatBuell, I tightened the bolts down a little at a time, in sequence as suggested. And RatBuell, your correct about the false reading. On the last attempt I realized that I had did that, so I tried again but was carefull not to get too close to the open carb.

After a long test ride the ol'S2 no longer pops and farts everytime you let off the throttle! : )

..another healthy one back on the road! Mine finally stopped oiling the rear tire with a couple new pushrod O-rings - that makes 2 S2's rehab'd this week, LOL.

I guess you spoke to soon Ratbuell!

I took the ol' S2 for a ride to PA today, as a testrun. And at the PA line she died!

It looks like the stator went. So after my wife gets lost a couple of times trying to pick me up in the truck, I get it loaded.

And if it wasn't bad enough that the ol'girl was in the back of the truck on a GORGEOUS day...

A strap came loose on the way home, she fell over before I came to a stop!

So now I have the rest of the winter to fix the stator, repair fiberglass, and repaint!!

When it rains, it pours!

Looks like it's going to be the 9R going to Daytona...

Mobil 1 gear oil...

Yeah, I know, it makes me wonder was this just a coincidence that the stator went with the Mobil 1, or was it just worn with 36K...

I have 34K miles of Mobil 1 in the 9R with no problems (now watch it go out!), and 15K in the S2 with no problems until now.

I thought about that the whole way home! The big question is; am I going to put it back in the primary when I do the change on the 9R before my trip...

I run Syn3 in both my Buells, with no problems. I don't know of any specific issues using M1...but I have heard of some stator/fluid issues on other HD/B bikes using non-HD/B oils.

Sorry to hear about your run of luck, but look at it this way: bad things happen in threes, right? So...intake, stator, tipover. You're done, so go have fun with the 9R, LOL!

Remembering some of the old posts, I think it seemed pretty conclusive that Mobil 1 gear oil and stators don't mix. I use Mobil 1 in all my bikes(motor oil) I leave the gear oil alone.Charlie
