I have a 97 M2 and need a different air cleaner assy. I don't really like the Forcewinder look. Will the Ness Big Sucker clear the frame? I like the look of it and I also like the Dragtron II. What are my other options? Any pics would be nice.

HD has a new Big Sucker as well. Use the XL version, it'll bolt right up...been thinking about it for my S1W, actually...

Mallair makes a nice one. If your tall, it may come down to which one gives you knee clearance. Unfortunately, the Force is best for that. I imagine just about any cleaner that fits a Sportster would fit the M2, thats the nice thing about having a carb vs. FI. That being said, some assemblies may need an adapter bracket of some sort.

The Westtek intake from American Sport Bike runs a 3" K&N filter and is set well forward to give you much more knee clearance. It might be worth taking a look at.

I was concerned about the backing plate clearing the frame tube that is rear of the carb. I guess that isn't really much of a concern. I like the Ness filter because the filter element is exposed. That Westtek is cool looking too.

The MaliAir is actually made by Crossroads Performance, MaliAir is just the name of the air cleaner ...

It is very similar to the big sucker ... maybe a little smaller ... Not a very friendly air cleaner when you get caught in the rain though .. bike ran for sh!t when I went camping with it and got caught ... other than that, decent air cleaner ... can swap out the center for different colors to match your bike if you chose to - I now have a black center cover on mine ..

It also allows more of the motor to be seen ...

No worries on any clearance issues, other than your knee depending on how tall you are - I am 6'2" and bump it occasionally (well - every time I ride ... but I don't mind)

On my 1997 S3T is the much sought after OEM Air Box with a SAMSONITE decal ...

The OEM Air Box makes the best(OEM equiped from the factory) slider ever made if "i" happen to fall on the right side ...

Inside this beauty is a OEM snorkel with a tapered K&N air filter ...

If looking RACIE is required, the OEM Air Box is removed and just the Snorkel with K&N filter is ran ...

It does not have the HARLY-DAVIDSON Chrome look of the BIG $$$.$$ FORCE set up,"BUT" it does the same thing(but with the look in BLACK) ...

Kerwin, I like that red painted rockerbox cover. Makes the v-twin portion more visable.

On my rockerboxes I used semi flat black on the top and bottom then painted that with a reflective clear coat the kind used on saftey signs. The middle section was a gloss black.

Back on topic.

IMO either the forcewinder or carbon fiber Buell air cleaner are the best two looking options.

Thanks. It's actually orange in imitation of the Harley colors [black and orange]. The colors in the picture are slightly subdued. I also used a Kuryakin 5/8" spacer for the Screaming Eagle air cleaner so that I could get enough clearance to hook up the 3/8" oil hoses for my puke tube. The Forcewinder aircleaner does look cool but if you get caught in a thunderstorm it can take in a lot of water. That's why I used a Twin Cam cover on my set up. Actually I would have used an S&S cover but it would have been much more complicated to build an adaptor.

I have limited options. Most of those would bash me in the knees whenever I hit the brakes. I have the Airtech Streamlining one on order, we'll see how it works.

KD - Did you have the rocker covers painted thru the dealer or do it yourself? If you didn't do it yourself may I ask how it cost? I love the look and those colors w/ be perfect match for my snap red/ black frame X1. Thanx

I doubt a dealer would do it.. The might remove the parts at 60/hr labor then give them to you to paint/coat and then you have them reinstall.
A local indy shop probably would.

But it's a simple DIY to remove -- then you could paint or send off to get powder coated.

Painting is all about prep work...

It's a home job. I painted the crankcases, jugs and heads with gloss black VHT [Very High Temperature] spray paint and went to AutoZone and bought the orange high temp paint. So far it's held up real well. No primer was used. Harley used to have the colored valve cover pieces for big twins. I don't know if this was ever offered for Sporties and Buells.
