Hello Everyone, I have a 96 S1. I love this bike! For some reason, the oil is begging to leak from the 4 rubber items on the oil tank. I called my LHS, and they said these items were obsolete at this point. Does any know where/what I should do on this. Is there a tank kit with all of th pieces in? Thanks everyone! | ||

You will have to find a used one. Check classifieds here on Bad Web or E-Bay. American Sport Bike has an aluminum oil tank which will give you an extra quart of capacity. The part # is 5550. Part is not cheap - 500.00$. You may be able to also find one of theses used, though I doubt it. | ||

Your parts guy is mistaken. 96 S1 oil tank, part number Q0110.9B Active part, available vendor direct (translates to a longer wait), includes hose fittings. $146.00. Grommets at hose fittings not sold seperately, only as part of the tank. The 4 well nuts that hold the tank to the bike (if those are what's leaking) are available seperately, Q0117.2, $4.10 each. | ||

There is no opening between those rubber well nuts and the tank. The tank have those "holders" molded into the plastic. I had a leak from the vent line which slowly trickled down the sides of the tank and made it seem like the well nuts were leaking. I thought the same as you and went to replace them and found out that it can not leak from these locations. On the top of your oil tank is a return vent line. This has a "Push in" type fitting that tends to wear out. I never have been able to find a replacement for it, no part number in the parts book, so I just sealed it up with Marine Goop. It seals well and remains flexible. Also check your return line. It is on the side (left) of the tank and if split, like mine did at Homecoming, could cause a similar situation | ||

BTW do not buy those well nuts form Harley. You can get them at a local fastner store for a LOT cheaper. I believe I got 16 of them for 5 bucks. The well nuts work by thread size so either bring in a bolt or tell them the thread is 5/16-18 | ||

+1 for both of Spidey's posts. It's amazing from where oil will APPEAR to be leaking. As for the well nuts, I picked them up from the neighborhood ACE, the helpful hardware man. | ||

Great info. I was just looking at a diagram in the book, wasn't sure if the well nuts went thru to oil or if they were sealed out. My S1W doesn't leak...yet, so I haven't had the pleasure of dickering with the tank, LOL. | ||

For reference the dipstick (62565-96Y) is still available for about $17 from the dealer. We're selling the wife's 02 Sportster, I'm debating swapping for the temp dipstick on her bike...the graduations seem to be the same. | ||

If the tank is leaking from the grommets at the fitting points(lines)..... Your local lawnmower shop is a source to replace them. | ||

Guys, thanks for the INFO! I appreciate it more than you can imagine. I think my plan is to deal with the lost oil till Nov. Tear 'er off, and really SEE where this thing is leaking. Thanks everyone, I love my Buell, and I would like next season to be Oil Free! | ||

I changed all of mine and it still leaks from the same places. Just not quite as much. | ||

Everyone, Is this what we are all talking about?   Mine leaks slightly from the pictured rubber fitting attached to the oil line. Replace the fitting? Any other suggestions? Thanks! | ||

That's one of the places I suspect is going on with mine. I'm off to ace hardware for some new well nuts as we speak. |
