I am going to look at a 2001 M2 with 4400 miles on it sat. morning and wonder if you Buell guys could give me some input on what to look for as far as warning signs. What type of recalls did the 01 have, what about typical problems? Is this motor solid mounted to the frame? Any input would be appreciated.
I had an 02 sporty with a Nallin 1250 motor I built in my garage so I know these engines pretty well,Mine never leaked and ran like stink with no problems BUT it was a shaker!

I think the 01-02 models were pretty well sorted. The only typical problem I can think of would be the stator going out... not sure if you can inspect or test it to predict a failure though.

The engine/swingarm assembly is rubber mounted to the frame in three points, two at the swingarm pivot, and one on the front engine mount. It might be a good idea to inspect these rubber isolators for tears, but I don't believe there was ever a problem with premature failure with these items.

The kickstand switch on these bikes are notorious for failing but are easily fixed. But again, I don't believe you can test it to predict a failure.

The stock shock is probably starting to leak... if it isn't, it's definitely going to. Perhaps you can get the price lower if you notice this beforehand.

I think the best thing to look for would be proper maintenance and care... the typical stuff.

Oh, and the bike is jetted really lean from the factory. So expect surging and coughing until it warms up... even then it'll surge a little... rejet even if you leave the rest of the bike stock.

By 2001, I don't think there were any recalls. Rocker box gaskets and the speedo sensor are typical problems. It will shake at idle but smooth out at 3000rpm. Typical modifications start with a new muffler and air cleaner, but the sky's the limit. 2001 has the tach, updated front rotor, and some other goodies compared to earlier bikes.

Great bike - but then, I'm a bit biased...

"Great bike - but then, I'm a bit biased..."

Great? I gotta disagree... it's an outstanding bike! And I'm not biased at all, just stating the facts as I know them.

It's purely a coincidence I have one...

The owner said he replaced the stator and it has a V&H pipe, screamin eagle air breather and jet kit too.

Make sure to get the old parts if he still has them.
