My S2 (6669 miles) all of a sudden would not start this morning. All electrical componets work, but when you hit the starter button, all it made was a fairly quite "Dun-tick" noise. Then I get home after work and click it about 5 times and the starter catches. Does this mean that the starter is going or a relay? | ||

I had this problem before. Could be moisture in the contacts. Open the electrical plugs, clean them and spray gently some vaseline in it. | ||

It could be the starter relay and you may have no further problems for a while... Moisture on the contacts has caused it on mine several times, especially after washing the bike... The relay is not sealed/moisture proof... | ||

Can you open up the relay and clean it up, or should I buy a new one? I have it off of the bike now and it appears that a little work with a screw driver may do the trick, but I don't want to damage anything on the inside. | ||

You mean to scrape away corrosion? little files work well for that. remember to put a little WD40 on the pins to slow the corrosion's return. | ||

Check the waher between the grounding strap and the frame. Also check the washer inbetween the voltage rgulator and the "black" wire. I had this same problem and it haunted me for two years till I tracked down rusty washers. I replaced mine with stainless ones and have had no problems since then. | ||

it may be possible to repair the relay but it's damb near impossible to take the relay cover off with out screwing it up. a new one cost me 5 bucks and i was able to get it at a regular hd dealer. | ||

Mine was just doing the same thing. The relay was my problem and I just bought a standard relay from NAPA auto parts. | ||

Thanks for all of your help guys, I appreciate it. I did fix the relay, and now I hear the loud 'clack' coming from the starter. So that is one problem fixed, only to present another. Does this mean the starter is shot? Can I go into it while on the bike? | ||

Sounds like you need to rebuilt the starter solenoid. At one time you could get new contacts for about 30 bucks. | ||

Also, check your cables going to the starter. The stock cables aren't really the best and if you get a voltage drop due to the wires corroding over time, it will loose power to the starter giving a similar indication. |
