My beloved '99 X1 sprang its first oil leak a couple days ago -- pretty good considering the clock has 13,600 miles on it. The only stuff that's wet seems to be the right and rear side of the rear cylinder, and just a bit along the very top of the right side of the rear cylinder, heading frontwards towards the rear breather tube. Only the head area is wet, not the valve cover above nor the cylinder jug below. It's leaking enough to collect and splatter on my battery box just a little. I'm thinking (hoping) that it's just a valve cover gasket, but I'd like to have you experts take a look at some pics and provide feedback. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice you've got. Rocker box base gasket is paper, R & R with updated parts from HD/Buell should solve the problem. | ||

Looks just like mine did last week. Im waiting on my Cometic gaskets to come in today so i can reassemble. I took the rear apart and have it all cleaned up and ready for new.I was afraid to try this myself but was a pc of cake thanks to the people on here. The old paper gaskets were literally in pcs. Im going to do the front as well while i am in there. | ||

yep, rocker box. Cometic makes nice gaskets, but the updated metal gasket from HD works great too, and I bet your local dealer has them in stock. don't forget to change them both, the front will go too. | ||

Cometic steel gaskets are good, but the rubber seals are little to be desired. If it were me i would use the Harley gaskets. | ||

The rubber o-rings go between the lower adn mid, and mid and upper rocker boxes The metal goes between tne box and the head. AS far as I know, there arent any paper gaskets left... Chase} | ||

You have to remove the rubber seals/gaskets to get to the metal gasket,i would replace the rubber gaskets while i was there, cometics rubber gaskets seem a little undersized, you have to fight to keep them into position, HD gaskets do not have that problem. They are actually rubber gaskets not o-rings, o-rings are circular in shape. (Message edited by radon30 on July 23, 2007) | ||

They are actually rubber gaskets not o-rings, o-rings are circular in shape. Okay, gotcha... The OLD harley gasket stayed nicely in place, the NEW brown ones SUCK... I fought them like a cometic...
