I have a new to me 1999 x1 with 15k.

I need to make a list of the service for the bike and engine. I am not new to bikes, and am a decent mechanic,

Please take a look at my list and add to it as req, I want to do all fluids, lube all parts etc.
List:
Lube, adjust steering head bearings,
Change fork oil (what weight oil is recommended for a heavy (225 LBS) rider?
Lube/adjust swing arm bearings and any linkage bearings
Change trans/ engine oil, fix oil leaks
New tires (do pilot power work good on this bike?)
change brake fluid (new front brakes)
check/replace wheel bearings (how often do these usually wear out?)
check to find loose bolts

the thing that is a real unk to me is the engine/drivetrain. I have no experience with harley engines at.

Is there anything else I am missing?

Where does oil commonly leak from this engine,
I see it visibly leaking from the shift shaft seal, and its coating the bottom of the engine.

Don't see anything leaking from the heads.
Thanks.

Whose-
These bikes are pretty easy to work on. My '99 S3 has 62,000mi. on it and has been quite reliable.
Here's what I can answer from your list:

Lube, adjust steering head bearings,Real easy to do, they have a tendency to wear due to the shake at idle and the propensity to lift the front end on acceleration.
Change fork oil (what weight oil is recommended for a heavy (225 LBS) rider?
Can't help here.
Lube/adjust swing arm bearings and any linkage bearings
Just swingarm bearings. Check your isolators too.
Change trans/ engine oil, fix oil leaks
To fix the leak on your shifter you'll have to pull the primary cover. Check the chain tensioner to make sure it is the updated model. When sliding the new seal on cut the corner off of a baggie to put over the splines, otherwise it'll leak again.
New tires (do pilot power work good on this bike?)
My neighbor uses them and loves em.
change brake fluid (new front brakes)It is a good idea to change the brake fluid every year. I have had a problem with my front brake sticking until I bleed the brakes.

check/replace wheel bearings (how often do these usually wear out?)
Check to see if they are from Turkey, if so replace them with Timkens. I used a slide hammer to change mine.
check to find loose bolts
Wise to do on any cycle.

Look at the knowledge vault section to find detailed answers on any of your questions. If the primary chain tensioner plate breaks the chain gets real noisy, if the shoe breaks up you'll have little pieces all through the tranny. I have done almost all the work on my bike with basic tools. Get a service manual for all the torque values and procedures. My bike was only taken to the shop for the warranty work.

-beenfartin,

Add checking the primary chain tension. The 2001 and later X-1s had an improved shoe that you may want to switch to.
I understand the intake gasket can be a problem (although mine has been trouble free).

The valve cover gasket tend to be a problem, replace them with the newer one-piece metal gaskets. Some noted the starter gasket can be a problem.
As noted above the Knowledge Vault is a great place for information.

Welcome to the fold!!!

Wheel bearings vary mine were going at 18k miles.

fork oil only one recomended that is type E oil from hd, they're Bloody showa forks

common leaks:
Rocker boxes,
Starter to primary
lesser-
Base gaskets
intake leaks
tranny puke ( possible crank seal )

If you have worked on an IL4 this is pretty simple.

Yes..Lube and adjust the throttle cables. There was recall on the '99X1 for poorly designed cable assemblies. If performed, your throttle cables will have a clamp between the cables right at the throttle body cups that receive the cable housings.I never got the service but always keep my cables closely adjusted to each other to prevent the cable housing from "possibly" jumping out of the cup causing loss of throttle control. And it can happen at WOT.

Check you cables.Be sure there isn't excessive play, nor so tight the throttle binds.

ALSO, in the throttle body, check the shaft the butterfly rides on, they are prone to breaking on earlier modles...(mine did while riding), when you look in the throttle body, if you only see the butterfly, adn 2 screws, you have the early style, if you see the shaft(without opeing the throttle), you have the newer revised one.

Mine likes to loosen the case bolts right at the shock, I check those once a week... and probably tighten every fwe weeks, to, once in 6 months, and yeah, it will leak...

Leaks, already mentioned, BUT...

the cam cover as well...and the oil pump gasket.

Oil, well, I know what the manual recommends... but....

Check your exhaust mount brackets for cracks

Try running some LUCAS upper cylinder lube & fuel injector cleaner. It really helps my bikes out especially if the bike has sat for any time at all. Run a tank ful of the highest octane fuel you can find, around here that is BP 92 octane premium, other area premium is 91 octane.

Check your belt for crtacks, your sproket for worn teeth and surface plating erosion on the belt path. There is a plating on the surface of the rear sprocket that wears thin and makes rough contact spots on your belt.
A new set of hot ignition wires and putting your spark plug wires on with dielectric grease.

In your service manual there's a 'things to check/do' list at various mileages.
