I know you can't corner as well with a 190 vs a 160 or 170, I am not a knee dragger and don't claim to be. That being said will a 190/50/17 fit on a S1? I have thought about getting a chain for less drag and better response and the chain vs the belt will gain a little room and I have even heard of people spacing out the primary/drive sprockets but not sure if I want to do that. I have a brand new set of Racetech Metzlers I wanted to use from a 748 that never made it to the bike but I just didn't know about the rear tire fitting. Plus I like the wide tire look. If anyone is running this wide of tire do you have any pics of the clearance between the belt/chain?

I am running a 200 on my X1 and have plenty of space. I did go to a chain drive however. It seems to corner fine for my needs. Shoot me a PM with e-mail address and i will send a couple photos.

The 190 will be fine with the belt...

I have been going back and forth from the 180 to the 190 on my x1 for 2+ years....

If you PM me the photos, I'll post them for you. It's remarkably easy to resize them with the free Irfan shareware offered for download in the Photo forum here.

Better response? I just switched from the chain back to the belt (no more cleaning grunge off of the PM wheels!!!) and I fail to notice any difference in response. Since the belt stretches less than the chain and weighs less theoretically the response should be better with a belt. If a human can actually feel a difference they must be part cyborg.....or it is purely a psychological thing.

I do not see how a 180, much less a 190 could possibly fit. On my 01 S3T the belt is quite close to the stock 170.

Okay, remember, 170 is mm wide....

17cm,

180 is

18 cm

etc...

2.5 cm per inch(rough guestimate)...

I centimeter, divided by half(you will only see HALF that width per side), and it will be hard to notice....

Plus, when you take into account, that the rim is 5"..... it will change the profile before APPRECIABLY changing the width...

Correct, BUT, I Crazy has a 170 now, thus, 5 inch rim, and I was responding to THAT particular post....

BUT, it all applies...

I have the cast wheel and prefer a 190 over the 180 and I run a belt. It is very, very close. I can't put the tip of my pinky between the tire and belt but it looks damn good. I have a 180 right now just because the service guy didn't clean his ears that morning, talk about aggravating!

If I am not mistaken, a 190 and 180 are the same width, just diff profile which makes the 190 look wider. I don't think I would run either on anything less than 5.5's. Personally, I favor the 180, much better in corners than the flatter 190.

Nope, tire sizes are broken down this way...

180/50-17

180mm wide,
50, aspect ratio...

The tires HEIGHT is 50% of its width

17, rim diameter...

So, when you read a tire size, that is what all those numbers mean....

SO, yes, the 190 IS wider than the 180, also a hair taller....

Its profile is going to be determined by the width of the rim is mounted on.

I think because of manufacturing tolerances, sometimes tires of different widths can look really close in size. The 180/55 207 I replaced with a 170/60 207 looked pretty close in width. But that 170/60 207 seemed like it was wider than the 170/60 205 that came originally on my bike.

I've also seen some 190/50 tires on 5.5" XB wheels that looked like they fit pretty good and others that looked like a big sausage.

I've got a 190 on my tuber and it improved the handling and side grip...my geometry is altered a bit, too, though. The front and rear tires now wear evenly on the sides, too. Before I'd have the rear on it's edge while the front still has room to spare. I don't like that feeling.

I used an older spacer PT#33334-85 with a 0.250" rear sprocket spacer using Renthal 520 XL sprockets (rear one needs center hole enlarged). I have about 1/8-3/16" clearance with the tire.

Baker has a nice kit that includes everything needed with a 530 chain plus a chain roller. I use whatever I can get cheap.

i've noticed that too, the front tire not evenly worn with the back. switching to a wider back tire will let me get more out of the front?

To an extent. I think tires are purposely designed that way so you start losing traction from the rear tire first if you're "running out" of tire.
