Not an Buell expert...far from it...so I need some advise/help before purchase of a 2001 S3 that to me seems to be in near perfect condition

1. A concern is where the 2001 S3 stood in calendar wise related to the recalls. In otherwords was it inc in the recalls or not....and if so how do I know if they were done.

2. This bike has what I was told is the factory OEM race kit (cams, pipes and muffler) and also has a carbon fiber aircleaner cover. Question: Is this the factory race kit for this bike and is 82hp and same for torque normal for this kit. What do stockers pull on the dyno?

3. The dyno run sheet shows a stutter at 5,750 +/- rpms due to the rev limiter (according to mechanic).... then goes up to 6,800 rpms. Mechanic that did the run told me that when riding this bike it will infact stutter at the 5,750 rpm mark. Question: Is this normal and if so what can be done so it pulls right up to 6,800 rpm without this hesitation.

4. How is the S3 with the stock seat on long rides two up. My wife liked the seat on the 1 mile spin around the housing development where the owner lives....buttttt...how will it work on say a 300 mile spin. It has the factory sidebags btw.

5. This S3 is dark grey with the "nuclear blue" frame color which I like but the rims are the polished aluminum ones vs those that are painted to match the frame. Could be me but the frame being the only blue on the bike looks odd in my view. Questions: Have any of you seen an S3 with the nuclear blue frame and rims painted before....and your view on the look. Question 2: How much are the polished aluminum rims going for today (perfect condition)

6. Question: Is there any passenger back rest or medium size top bag that could be used as a passenger back rest avail this S3 from any company

7. Mechanic told me the bike needs brought in every 3,000 miles for an oil change and checking. Quesiton: Is this normal.

8. Current owner has a shop worksheet showing replacing one cam due to excessive wear........is this normal since bike only has 10k miles

9. What is the story on the stock rear shock in terms of settings and reliablity/life span. What replacements are people using

10. How good is this bike in the twisties when set up right. I rode an early S2 on a test ride at the Poconos WERA race and found it to be a great handling bike that was also comfortable

11. What is the going price range for a 2001 S3 in near perfect condition with the factory sidebags

12. Any "tube frame" based rallies or rides in the PA, MD, WV areas

1. contact a sponsoring dealer with the VIN for recall info.

2. slight variation Depending on the dyno, that is about the stock # VS My stock X1 (Same motor)I would expect High 80s

3. Bull kookies! the mill should pull smoothly from idle to rev limit, there is a problem a dyno tune is not the answer, a careful examination by a competent mechanic is.

5. a. Cant say it would be your bike any way, b. less than they are worth, I have seen an X1 with N-blu wheels too much blue.
the PM wheels can be clear coated (I did mine) and they look ok.
6. See American Sport Bike (sponsor) they sell packs seats etc, also see the KV for seat and accessory commentary
7. I check my Oil about every 1000 miles or less and change it about every 3~5 K running full synthetic [HD]
8. no
9. life varies, most folks if they can afford it upgrade see #6 My bike has 25K miles and is on its second shock.
10. Better than SEX!

Good luck with the purchase I look at on line blue books and ebay selling prices to get an Idea as to value, Owning an S3 thunderbolt is about owning a little slice of americanna it just happens to .... GO

2. Factory race kits for the S3 consisted of an ECM, full exhaust system, and CF hamcan aircleaner - no cams.

HP varies from dyno to dyno - comparisons between two bikes on different dyno's are pretty subjective, but around 80 hp is about right.

3. The rev limiter kicks in at 6800rpm on the stock and factory race ECM (the stock ECM hits it softer though). That stutter is being caused by something else, not the rev limiter. Check out the dyno sheets posted in the Knowledge Vault and see for yourself.

4. Don't know. Butts are really subjective too.

5. Don't know, never seen them painted. If you want to get rid of those PM's you shouldn't have a problem, they're pretty desirable. The rear PM is also 1/2" wider than the stock three-spoke wheel.

6. Don't know.

7. You might want to just change the oil yourself and get a shop manual, and it's always a good idea to check things constantly on a bike that shakes so much. Whether you take it to a dealer or do it yourself is up to you.

8. A worn out cam at 10,000 miles is not normal, but stuff just happens sometimes... you know?

9. The stock Showa is a horrible leaker in any guise - long or short, with or without a reservoir. Most people find them stiff and unyielding to sharp impacts when they do work. A Penske shock valved to your riding weight will totally transform the rear suspension - I can personally vouch for that. Works Performance makes another popular damper for tuber Buells, but theirs doesn't feature ride height adjustment (may or may not be important to your, it is to me).

Both these shocks are easily rebuildable.

11. Don't know.

12. Don't know, but you're coming to MB5 in North Georgia next year if you get a Buell. You'll know what it is when the time comes.

Click on my profile. It will give you a general idea about the wheels and frame. Mine has stock cams (with K&N and vance and hines)and runs 83 on the dyno. Other than that I'm not too familiar with the S3's but it looks like you're in some competent and capable hands so far.

Not so sure on this, but have liked the Buells from the get go... we go back for real test ride next week sometime.

I have the PM wheels on my '99 S3 with 60,000mi. on it. I polish them a couple of times a year with Mother's aluminum polish, available at Wal-Mart. They still look pretty darn good even though I ride it in the winter once in awhile on salty roads.
My wife didn't like the S3 but there are quite a few others that ride two-up.
